Non Technical Summary
In 2012 the National Association of University Forest Resources Programs (NAUFRP) will partner with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) in efforts and activities that will recognize the history and significant accomplishments of the McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program. 2012 will represent the 50th anniversary of the Program, and as part of the activities, this project will develop a digital video that will effectively highlight the McIntire-Stennis Program's history and significant accomplishments. The final video will be distributed to NAUFRP institutions, as well as to state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other public-sector and private-sector organizations with interests in forestry research. The video will also be made available for use in lectures, conferences, and workshops involving forestry research.

Goals / Objectives
The overall objective of this proposed project is to develop and produce a digital video approximately 15 minutes in length that will effectively highlight the M-S Program's significant accomplishments and current and future challenges and priorities for research and graduate training.
Project Methods
Stephen F. Austin State University is a member institution of NAUFRP, and the Principal Investigator (PI) of this proposed work is President-elect of NAUFRP for 2011-2012; the PI is therefore a member of the NAUFRP Executive Committee. The proposed video will be outlined, scripted, and produced with direct involvement of an ad hoc committee that will be chaired by the PI, and that will include additional NAUFRP Executive Committee members - the Research Chair, the Policy Chair, and the General Counsel; the ad hoc committee will also include at least two NIFA National Program Leaders who work directly with the M-S Program. The ad hoc committee will help design and script the M-S 50th Anniversary video, primarily by providing advice at each stage of the video design and production process. Videography experts will be employed to create and produce the video based on guidance from the ad hoc committee. The final product will include still photographs as well as short video segments that will be woven into the overall script. To acquire photographs and short video segments that are highly relevant to the script, the PI and/or staff who work on this project will contact NAUFRP-member institutions to request their help with specific needs. Throughout the production process, draft versions of the video will be shared with ad hoc committee members for comment and revision. A draft of the video will also be made available for review by the NAUFRP Executive Committee, as well as by the Assistant Director and other leaders of NIFA's Institute of Bioenergy, Climate, and Environment. The draft video will be revised based on comments provided by NAUFRP and NIFA leaders. The Stennis Center for Public Service, the John C. Stennis Institute of Government, and other organizations that may have an interest in the production of the McIntire-Stennis video will also be contacted and asked to review draft versions during the production process. The final video will be distributed to NAUFRP institutions, as well as to state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other public-sector and private-sector agencies and organizations with significant interests in forestry research. The video will be made available for use in lectures, conferences, and workshops involving forestry research, as well as for posting at websites and other venues. Tentative plans are being made for a conference or national symposium recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the McIntire-Stennis Program in 2012; the video may be used by NAUFRP, NIFA, and other partners to build interest in attending the national conference.

Progress 08/15/11 to 08/14/12

Outputs
OUTPUTS: A video was created and distributed that highlights accomplishments and challenges relating to the 50th anniversary of the McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program. The video includes copies that are 18 minutes in length, and a shorter version that is 12 minutes in length. Also, a brochure was created and printed that can be used to accompany either version of the video. The video was distributed via DVDs that were mailed to USDA NIFA partners, USFS partners, and to all members of the university organization of forestry schools, i.e., the National Association of University Forest Resources Programs. PARTICIPANTS: Collaborators included faculty/staff at Stephen F. Austin State University, as well as NAUFRP representatives and individuals from NIFA who are leaders of the McIntire-Stennis program. TARGET AUDIENCES: The target audience includes laypersons who have an interest in forests, current graduate students and faculty members in forestry, policy makers who make forestry research decisions at national and state levels, anduniversity administrators who allocate funds to research. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Not relevant to this project.

Impacts
The video has been shown in many venues and to many audiences, with a very positive impact in each case. It was shown to the Forestry Research Advisory Council of USDA, for example, as well as to the Association of Research Directors of 1890 institutions. It was also shown at the plenary session of the Society of American Foresters annual meeting in October 2012, and at many state and local events (state forestry association meetings, for example, as well as state and local SAF meetings). Many requests for additional showings have been generated, and the video has helped lead to discussions within NAUFRP regarding the need to further update the McIntire-Stennis strategic plan.

Progress 08/15/11 to 08/13/12

Outputs
OUTPUTS: A script has been completed for the 50th anniversary video, and many of the script elements have been recorded in digital audio and/or digital video format. A team of faculty, staff, and students from the Colleges of Forestry and Agriculture, Liberal and Applied Arts, and Fine Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University have helped organize and construct the draft video. A draft will soon be available for review by partnering organizations, with a final completion goal date of March 2012. PARTICIPANTS: The project has involved faculty members from the College of Fine Arts, the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, and the College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University. The project has also involved scientists and administrators from USDA NIFA, USGS, the University of Florida, the University of Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State University, and NE MS Community College. TARGET AUDIENCES: The target audience for the video produced by the project includes elected leaders and their staff in Washington, DC, as well as within states that receive funding from the McIntire-Stennis Program. The audience also includes current graduate students and faculty in forestry and wildlife disciplines, and organizations with an interest in forestry, wildlife, and natural resources. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: No modifications have been required to date.

Impacts
This video will help to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the McIntire-Stennis Cooerative Forest Research Program, a bill signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in October 1962. The video will highlight the significance of the Act, including it's history, and significant accomplishments in research and graduate training in forestry, wildlife, and related sciences. The video will also highlight the current challenges for research in these areas of science. The video will be used in several venues to celebrate and recognize the McIntire-Stennis Program in 2012 and beyond.
