Non Technical Summary
This project will help ten US-based scientists to attend the 8th World Soybean Congress. Nearly 2,000 people attend this meeting and this will help in the career development of these scientists and will help in the dissemination of information and establishing international collaborations. We will target young scientists and those from underrepresented groups.

Goals / Objectives
We intend to help defray travel costs for 10 US-based scientists to attend the 8th World Soybean Congress. We will focus primarily on newer investigators and those from under-represented groups. This meeting is the primary meeting for a broad spectrum of soybean researchers spanning the molecular to applied to processing to end-users.
Project Methods
Each person will be chosen with the help of the organizing committee and we will target new investigators (young scientists early in their careers) and those from underrepresented groups. The ten that are chosen will be given a small amount of money to help defray travel costs to the meeting site. The organizers are matching this by paying for registration and hotel costs.

Outputs
OUTPUTS: Nearly 300 scientists (academic and industry) attended the conference in Indianapolis, IN. An abstract book that included 136 poster and speaker abstracts was published and all abstracts are searchable at http://genome.purdue.edu/soy2008/cgi/abstract_search.pl. The list of presenters and schedule of sessions is available at http://genome.purdue.edu/soy2008/confSchedule.html. PARTICIPANTS: Training and profession development: we targeted junior scientist including new faculty, postdocs and graduate students for opportunities to present at the symposium. Emphasis was given to females as well. Nearly 300 participants from around the country spanning academia and industry. Organizers: Conference Planning Committee Scott Abney, Research Plant Pathologist, USDA-ARS, Purdue University Virginia Ferris, Nematology, Systematics and Molecular Biology, Dept. of Entomology, Purdue University Karen Kaczorowski, Research Molecular Biologist, USDA-ARS, Purdue University Allen Leroy, Soybean Breeding and Genetics Project Leader, Dept. of Agronomy, Purdue University Jianxin Ma, Plant Genomics, Dept. of Agronomy, Purdue University Jessica Schlueter, Plant Genomics, Dept. of Agronomy, Purdue University Shannon Schlueter, Dept. of Computer and Information Technology. Impacts
Abstracts from the meeting are available at: http://genome.purdue.edu/soy2008/cgi/abstract_search.pl. Many students and postdoctoral associates attended the meeting because of the funding. INdustry representatives were also in attendance providing opportunities for postdocs and students to interact and investigate potential employment opportunities. We also attempted to include new investigators in the speaker list to get them integrated into the soybean genetics community as shown in the program http://genome.purdue.edu/soy2008/confSchedule.html. Sessions included genomics, biotic and abiotic stresses and seed engineering. In each session we tried to have a mix of senior and junior scientists. Dr. Joe Ecker was the plenary lecturer providing insight into the early postgenome days in Arabidopsis.
