Non Technical Summary
In the event of a natural or man-made disaster, the genetic pool of domestic production species could be destroyed. This project is the development of a cryopreserved seed bank of germplasm, DNA, and blood from rare and endangered breeds of food and fiber animals to create a unique genetic resource for the future of unique genetic traits in danger of becoming extinct. Such traits include environmental adaptability and disease resistance.

Goals / Objectives
The objectives of the program are twofold: first, to produce and preserve germplasm of rare breeds of domestic animals, and second, to establish and implement a comprehensive herd health and biosecurity plan.
Project Methods
Embryos, semen and cells are produced, propagated, genotyped and cryopreserved using standard and novel specie-specific methods. Procedures of superovulation, artificial and natural breeding, embryo/semen/gamete collection (surgical and non-surgical) and cell culture are used. We are implementing a comprehensive herd health program with special consideration given to the unique qualities of each rare breed brought on site.
