Non Technical Summary
The 50th Annual Maize Genetics Conference will provide an opportunity for maize geneticists from the US and other nations to joiin together to share their latest research results. Topics covered will include: molecular geneitcs, developmental genetics, cytogenetics, transposable elements, mutation and transmission genetics, genomics, education and outreach. The Maize Meeting is an outstanding conference for graduate students to attend, as it allows them to share their discoveries with leaders in the field, through both formal and informal presentations.

Goals / Objectives
The 2008 Annual Maize Genetics Conference will offer presentations on a wide range of topics in biology, genome science, and their application to crop improvement through plant breeding and biotechnology. In addition to marking its 50th anniversary, the 2008 meeting will highlight the release of a draft sequence for the maize genome. The Maize Genetics Conference is thus a scientific venue for genome research of high value U.S. crops, the key priority of the 2008 USDA Plant Genome program To celebrate and bring visibility to this event, the 50th Maize Genetics Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., from February 27 through March 2, 2008 at the Marriott Wardman Park. More than 500 scientists are expected to attend the scientific program and special events, which include press releases, meetings with Congressional aides and representatives of governmental agencies, and recognition ceremonies for persons who have contributed to the advancement of maize genetics and plant biology.
Project Methods
Strong participation by undergraduates and graduate students has been a long-standing tradition of the Maize Genetics Conference. Involvement of young scientists has fostered a cooperative spirit that facilitates future collaborations and interactions. This project will provide financial support for graduate student attendees at the 50th Maize Genetics Conference.
