Progress 07/01/07 to 06/30/12
Outputs OUTPUTS: Diverse research projects on applied nutrition of dairy cows were completed and results published in scientific journals and conference proceedings. PARTICIPANTS: Carla Fish, MS degree project. Matt Akins, Ph.D. degree project. Luiz Ferraretto, MS degree project. DSM Nutrition Products Ltd., Collaborator. Zinpro Corp., Collaborator. TARGET AUDIENCES: Nutrition consultants, feed industry, veterinarians, and dairy producers. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts Findings provided information to allow nutrition consultants and feed industry to fine tune dairy cattle feeding programs for improved efficiency and profitability for dairy producers.

Progress 01/01/09 to 12/31/09
Outputs OUTPUTS: Projects were conducted to evaluate the following: effect of slow-release urea product on lactation performance in commercial dairy herds; effect of distillers dried grains on lactation performance in commercial grass-based dairy herds; effects of organic trace minerals on dairy cattle reproduction. PARTICIPANTS: Francisco Inostroza and Katie Hackbart worked under this project in partial fulfillment of their master's degrees. Commercial dairy producers collaborated on the urea and distillers grains trials. TARGET AUDIENCES: Nutrition consultants, feed industry, veterinarians, and dairy producers. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts Results provided dairy producers and their nutrition consultants with field data to evaluate the feasibility for adopting these feeding practices.

Progress 01/01/08 to 12/31/08
Outputs OUTPUTS: A project was conducted to evaluate the effect of a dietary essential oils supplement on performance of early lactation dairy cows. Results have been presented at several national nutrition conferences through their proceedings papers. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: Target audience includes nutrition advisors, feed companies and veterinarians. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts Results show a potential natural feed additive alternative to antibiotic products for modifying rumen microbial fermentation.
