Goals / Objectives
Conduct applied research trials with apple and tart cherry relating to IPM, cultivar and rootstock evaluation, organic management and quality fruit production. Knowledge gained from these trials and elsewhere are used to support outreach efforts to the local and statewide commercial apple and cherry industries as well as hobby and home fruit growers.
Project Methods
Replicated experiments and trials on the Peninsular Station, and off site at commercial orchards, provide answers to pressing long and short-term production and management questions. Demonstration plantings provide a stage for introduction of novel and new growing and management techniques. An extensive area automated weather monitoring and pest scouting program provide up to date disease and insect data used to evaluate pest pressure and assist in making pest management suggestions and reports to commercial fruit growers. All experimental, demonstration and monitoring information is incorporated into grower field day, fruit school, phone-in and web based outreach information services that are made available.
