Impacts Our research is helping develop a more nuanced view of how urbanization alters water quality and stream ecosystems and continues to affirm the importance of riparian buffers of natural vegetation in maintaining important aspects of stream health. We have elucidated the drivers and variability of stream habitat characteristics in the Southeast. Our research during this project period has strengthened our understanding of forestry BMP effectiveness, identified important issues for modeling hydrologic effects of timber management in the Southeast, and also quantified effects of center-pivot irrigation on streamflows in southwest Georgia.

Impacts Conversion of southern Appalachian stream valleys from native forest to pasture and lawns has fundamentally altered soil hydraulic properties, specifically reducing saturated hydraulic conductivities by an order of magnitude and increasing bulk densities. The hydrologic effects of these soils changes outweigh the reduction in transpiration associated with this conversion, with the net result that lower baseflows are associated with greater amounts of forest conversion. We have also further documented urbanization of streams in southwest Georgia reducing the quality of fish and macroinvertebrate populations when compared to regional reference sites and aided several municipalities in implementing watershed protection plans.

Land Use and Water Quality Relationships in the ACF Basin. National Academy of Environmental Design Water and Sustainability Symposium. February 16-17, University of Florida. In addition, we used research results in our classroom teaching including the courses Soils and Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Quantitative Methods in Hydrology, and Field Methods in Hydrology. PARTICIPANTS: Todd Rasmussen, Professor of Hydrology. Jay Shelton, Associate Professor of Fisheries. Rhett Jackson, Professor of Hydrology. Steve McCutcheon, Adjunct Professor of Engineering. Denise Carroll, PhD student (now graduated). Katie Price, PhD student (now graduated). Negussie Tedela, PhD student (now graduated). Abby Farakesh, technician. Shelley Robertson, technician. Erin Harris, technician. TARGET AUDIENCES: Our audiences are the scientific, engineering, and regulatory communities involved with understanding and managing water quality issues associated with forest conversion to non-forest uses. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts Our recent research has demonstrated the strong effect of forest conversion to either lawn or pasture on surficial soil properties, specifically: increasing bulk density, reducing hydraulic conductivity, and reducing water storage capacity. These changes in surficial soils reduce the fraction of rainfall that infiltrates and increases the fraction of overland flow. This might explain the apparent reduction in baseflow in southern Appalachian streams as forest cover is converted to lawn or pasture. Our research has demonstrated that the popular curve number method for estimating stormflows cannot be calibrated in forested watersheds of the East Coast. Our research has also shown that healthy macroinvertebrate communities in Piedmont streams occur almost exclusively in watersheds with more than 50% forest cover and less than 20% urban land cover.

We have published a journal article and a PhD dissertation. We also taught a short course on water quality issues for middle school teachers. PARTICIPANTS: Students: Josh Romeis, Katie Price, Negussie Tedela, Jeff Riley, and Denise Carroll. Faculty: Todd Rasmussen, Rhett Jackson, and Jay Shelton. Technicians: David Ballinger, Julia Ruth, Shelley Robertson, and Erin Harris. Collaborators: Too numerous to list. TARGET AUDIENCES: Eventually this project is meant to inform municipalities and state agencies regarding water quality effects of land conversion with varying levels of BMP implementation. This information will be useful in the development and implementation of TMDL programs and other water quality management efforts. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts In association with professors from Augusta State University (B.M. Saul, PI), Drs. Jackson and Rasmussen and their lab coordinator Denise Carroll helped teach a short course for middle school teachers entitled "Augusta State Univerity's mountains to sea aquatic ecosystem program." Approximately 20 teachers were taught over a ten day period at sites around the state of Georgia.
