Goals / Objectives
Applied research and demonstration of alternative and innovative agricultural or gardening practices in order to provide sound and solid information to producers and gardeners of Northwest Wisconsin interested in future crops (e.g., biodisesel fuel, wine grapes...), origin of food (e.g., organic production) and decorative trends (e.g., gardening).
Project Methods
The Spooner Research Station has set aside a few acres of land for research plots, establishment of certified organic fields and demonstration garden to work exclusively on problems and issues raised by the local community.

Progress 10/01/06 to 09/30/11

Outputs
OUTPUTS: The Spooner Agricultural Research Station provides services to Principal Investigators of the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Some small projects are done directly by the Research Station: S1131- Had 4 varieties of wine grapes planted in 2007 for demonstration. This planting is still pre-production. Grape information was presented at field days. S2123- Bedding/garden plant. A demonstration garden is maintained each year. Annual vegetable and flower plants are demonstrated to show the differences in All-American selections. Perennial plants and fruits are demonstrated as well for their suitability this plant hardiness zone. The garden is open to the public for self guided tours and is the host location to several UW-Extension field days or meetings each year. PARTICIPANTS: Phil Holman, Superintendent Spooner Ag Research Station; Yves Berger, Sheep Researcher Spooner Ag Research Station; Kevin Schoessow, Area UW-Extension Agriculture Agent TARGET AUDIENCES: Local farmers and gardeners. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.

Impacts
S2123- had increased interest in gardening in 2010 due to general economic stress. S1131 -- had several area people initiate wine grape plantings who utilized information from the Spooner Ag Research Station

Some small projects are done directly by the Research Station: S1131 Had 4 varieties of wine grapes planted in 2007 for demonstration. This planting is still pre-production. Grape information was presented at field days. S1844 Was a date of planting and variety trial of sunflowers for on-farm oil pressing and biodiesel production. Trial data was shared in a 6 county UW-Extionsion newsletter. S2123 Bedding/garden plant. A demonstration garden is maintained each year. Annual vegetable and flower plants are demonstrated to show the differences in All-American selections. Perenial plants and fruits are demonstrated as well for their suitability this plant hardiness zone. The garden is open to the public for self guided tours and is the host location to several UW-Extension field days or meetings each year. S1848 Canola production was not conducted at the station this year. PARTICIPANTS: Phil Holman, Superintendent Spooner Ag Research Station; Yves Berger, Sheep Researcher Spooner Ag Research Station; Kevin Schoessow, Area UW-Extension Agriculture Agent TARGET AUDIENCES: Local farmers and gardeners. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.

    Impacts
The projects are mostly demonstration projects with knowledge transmitted orally on a one to one basis, to small groups of visitors or through more organized field days. The impacts of the projects are generally locally or regionally limited.

    Outputs
OUTPUTS: The Spooner Agricultural Research Station provides services to Principal Investigators of the University of Wisconsin-Madison doing a variety of agricultural researches. Some small projects are done directly by the Research Station: S1131: Wine grapes. 4 new varieties of wine grapes have been planted. Notes have been taken on 1st year growth. Dissemination of knowledge done through annual field day. S1844: Sunflower. 4 differents days of planting and 7 varieties. Notes on growth, maturity, date of harvest have been taken. Dissemination of knowledge done through annual field day. S1848: Small demonstration plots. No data collected. S2123. Bedding/garden plant. A demonstration garden is established every year. Perenial plants and flowers, annual flowers, vegetables etc. The public takes self guided tour following a "Garden Book". A yearly garden day is organized every year including expert speakers. PARTICIPANTS: The project at the Spooner Research Station are masterminded and taken care of by Philip Holman, assistant superintendent. For the demonstration garden project Philip Holman is assisted by Kevin Soeschow UW-Extension. TARGET AUDIENCES: The groups of people benefiting from the projects are area farmers from Northwest Wisconsin, and all interested in landscaping and gardening.
