Project Methods
The Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) facilitates outreach, training and multidisciplinary research by ISU faculty, staff and students and partner organizations (non-governmental organizations and universities) to sustainably improve livelihoods in rural communities of developing countries. CSRLs approach is: People centered: focusing on capabilities and strengths of the rural people. Participatory: goals, priorities and strategies are defined by the poor. Holistic: factors that enhance or constrain households are connected to larger institutions and policies. Sustainability-minded: in social, cultural, economic, institutional and environmental dimensions. Efforts through CSRL: Respond to expressed interests of in-country partner organizations. Engage small-scale farmers and communities in participatory learning and research. Lead to direct benefits for rural small-scale farmers and communities in Uganda. Involve multi-disciplinary and multi-institutionalcollaboration to effectively elicit the expertise of team members, and establish the basis for long-term collaboration. Integrate graduate and undergraduate student learning.
