Non Technical Summary
A network of Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) has been established to provide research, techinal assistance, and education to federal agency managers and resource professionals. UNR has been chosen as the host University. The primary purpose of the GB-CESU is to provide resource managers with high-quality scientific research, technical assistance and education through the linking of participating agencies and university partners.

Goals / Objectives
This project is part of the larger CESU activities. Under this project, UNR will cooperatate with National Park Service (NPS)in the development of a workplan for CESU support activities to be conducted under this task agreement, collaboratively undertake work designed to support activities of the GB CESU.
Project Methods
The purpose of this agreement is to conduct activities to support accomplishment of the Great Basin CESU goals. Activities supported by this task agreement will include such things as workshops, communication tools, education programs, technical assistance and research coordination. UNR will hire a student to work on the NPS tasks, assist with the organization of meetings, provide coordination services, provide office space, and conduct literature reviews.

Progress 01/01/09 to 12/31/09

Outputs
OUTPUTS: Through this task agreement UNR provides technical support to meet critical natural resource needs for the National Park Service (NPS). During 2009 project activities included maintenance of GLORIA (Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments) monitoring on four peaks at Great Basin National Park, that was installed in 2008. This work continues to be a collaborative effort between NPS staff and a UNR contractor. Plots will be read every five years and will be used to monitor vegetation species composition and cover in relation to changing climate. The other ongoing project is a collaborative effort to recruit and train unemployed or at-risk youth to preform BLM habitat improvement projects, under the guidance of job counselors/coaches. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.

Impacts
A draft report for the Great Basin NP GLORIA monitoring projects continues to be developed and will be completed in 2010.

Progress 01/01/08 to 12/31/08

Outputs
OUTPUTS: Through this task agreement UNR provides technical support to meet critical natural resource needs for the National Park Service (NPS). During 2008 project activities included a service trip by Dr. Sudeep Chandra and students to Crater Lake National Park for the purposes of reviewing existing lake research with park staff and for planning new benthic research at the lake. The other project conducted this year was to install GLORIA (Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments) monitoring on four peaks at Great Basin National Park. This work was a collaborative effort between NPS staff and a UNR contractor. Plots will be read every five years and will be used to monitoring vegetation species composition and cover in relation to changing climate. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.

Impacts
A draft report for the Great Basin NP GLORIA monitoring projects is being developed and will be completed in 2009.

    Progress 01/01/07 to 12/31/07

    Outputs
During the reporting period a project workplan was developed as specified in the agreement. Two activities were planned for 2007 - a service trip to Crater Lake National Park and database development. The CRLA trip has been deferred until 2008 and the database project did not materialize. Therefore the only activity under this agreement in 2007 was a minimal amount of office suppport (xeroxing, etc.).

    Impacts
There are no tangible outcomes to report on during 2007 since only a minimal amount of office support was provided under this agreement this year.

    Progress 01/01/06 to 12/31/06

    Outputs
UNR is working together with the National Park Service to support a variety of scientific and educational activities associated with the Great Basin Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (GB-CESU). During this first year of the project UNR faculty members will develop a multi-year project work plan (due summer 2007). To date, only minor administrative CESU support activity has occurred under this task agreement.

    Impacts
This project provides opportunities for university personnel to participate in research on National Park Service managed lands. Such research contributes to the improved stewardship of natural and cultural resources in the parks.
