Non Technical Summary
The previous ten conferences, which met every second year, were fully subscribed. The current conference will be limited to 250 participants. The requested funds will support the attendance of graduate students, resident physicians, postdoctoral fellows and established national and international investigators. A detailed program, led by senior scientists, emphasizes the participation of junior scientists new to the field. To bring together investigators at the forefront of this field at a biannual conference.

Goals / Objectives
Funds are requested for partial support of the 11th FASEB summer conference on Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and One-Carbon Metabolism, to be held August 5 to August 10, 2006, at Indian Wells, California. Impairments in folate-dependent one-carbon metabolism are common and highly associated with adverse affects on human health including increased risk for birth defects, cancer, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. The participants at this conference represent a diverse and broad range of disciplines who share a common interest in this topic. This conference offers a unique opportunity for productive, formal and informal interactions between clinician investigators, basic scientists and those involved in health, nutrition, agriculture and science policy. The goals of this are to: 1) facilitate the translation of basic science advances into clinical interventions and nutrition policy and 2)illuminate the value of clinical and population-based observations as tools for
basic science.
Project Methods
The selected session and workshop topics cover the basic sciences and clinical research with particular emphasis on the interaction and potential synergy between the two. The specific session subjects include: (1) One Carbon Metabolism: Enzymology and Regulation, (2) Genetic Epidemiology, Pharmacogenomic, Genetic Variation, (3) Methionine Metabolism, (4) Homocysteine Toxicity, (5) Inherited Diseases, (6) One Carbon Metabolism and Methylation, (7) Clinical and Chemical Advancements in Folate and Cobalamin Transport, (8) Novel Cobalamin Cofactors and Novel Therapeutic and Diagnostic Roles, (9) One Carbon Metabolism and Developmental Biology. The workshops will provide expert and current analyses of: (1) Folate Fortification and Disease, (2) One Carbon Metabolism and Cognitive Disease. The format encourages discussions among the presenters and the fellows, residents and junior investigators in attendance. Similarly, the poster sessions also highlight the activities and
needs of the younger participants.
