Monique and Jared are both freshmen and Animal Science majors. Angel is a transfer student who has an Associate's Degree from Northeast Community College at Norfolk, NE.
PRODUCTS: I meet regularly with our MSP scholars. We have had dinner together and gone bowling so that the scholars get to know each other. The freshmen students are in the Dean's Scholars in Experiential Leadership (DSEL), a freshman leadership seminar for the students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). Jared completed AGRI 103 - Introduction to Agriculture and Natural Resource Systems with Library 110 incorporated in the course (required) and he received an A-. Monique is currently enrolled in AGRI 103. AGRI 103 is required for freshmen and sophomores so Angel is not required to take it. The MSP scholars have begun development of their resume with the help of the CASNR Career Specialist.
OUTCOMES: Currently, all thee of the MSP scholars are successful in their academic majors, none are on academic probation. We are currently working on their four year plans so that they stay on track for graduation. All are members of the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRR) Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and are looking at attending the National MANRRS Conference in Birmingham, AL.
DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES: Dissemination activities will begin at the end of the first academic year for our MSP scholars. A progress report is filed with the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources after each MSP group meeting, updating him on the progress and success of each MSP scholar.
FUTURE INITIATIVES: The MSP Scholars will be encouraged to enroll in AGRI 388 - Employment Seminar to learn about job search techniques, cover letters and resumes, mock interviews and networking. MSP scholars will also be matched with faculty and begin research projects in their academic major. Research can be presented at professional meetings and at the National MANRRS Conference. The MSP scholars will be matched with industry representatives as an industry mentor. The industry mentors will be able to host job shadowing for our MSP scholars and provide internship information. MSP Scholars to complete at least one internship as an MSP Scholar.
Impacts The MSP Scholars have had a very successful first semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jared stated: The MSP Program has allowed me to save money that can be used for future use when I continue my education in a Master's Program. It allows me to cut down on tuition costs and allows me to use money that I was going to use on tuition for schooling down the road. This program has benefited me greatly and I am glad to be apart of it.
