Non Technical Summary
Rangeland weeds cause significant economics losses in the plains, prairie and desert areas of the central and southwestern U.S. As much as 63 million acres in the southwestern U.S. could be subjected to management of a single undesirable species, broom snakeweed. This projects examines the biological characteristics of rangeland plants to develop management strategies for invasive plants.

Goals / Objectives
Overall objectives of this research are to: 1) Understand more fully the onset of invasion and persistence of rangeland weeds; 2) evaluate the toxicology and physiological effects of poisonous and noxious weeds on livestock; 3) develop integrated management approaches for rangeland weeds; 4) investigate the processes of range recovery after drought.
Project Methods
This project is coordinated by a Rangeland Ecosystem Research Task Force (RERTF) in the NMSU College of Agriculture and Home Economics. The Task Force consists of an administrative executive committee and a research team comprised of faculty devoting significant time to the project. For each approved project, a research account is established in the Agricultural Experiment Station and assigned to the department in which the principal investigator resides.
