Progress 01/01/10 to 12/31/10
Outputs OUTPUTS: Three (3) publications and six paper presentations were generated in 2010 for this project. The information provided through these outlets should result in more informed and enhanced decision-makers where alternatives are available to them. Also, we, as the authors of these publications and presentations, were able to present, discuss, and publish our work with various interested stakeholders. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: TARGET AUDIENCES: The target audiences to whom we catered during this reporting period were graduate students, faculty members at various academic institutions, and private and public decision-makers interested in our work. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts The information generated from the three publications and six paper presentations will enhance the data, information, knowledge, and hopefully wisdom, of stakeholders who have access to our work. With these publications and paper presentations, stakeholders such as graduate students, researchers, public and private decision-makers, and others interested in how transportation firms, farms, and related industries make decisions to profitably impact their entities should be better informed about this decision-making process. For example, the results of the study that examined the componential changes of the food and kindred products freight originated by Class I railroads in the United States using secondary data from 1990 through 2007 provide some insights into the competitive positions of commodity originations hauled by Class 1 railroads between 1990 and 2007. Specifically, the results revealed that declines in tons of food and kindred products originated by Class I railroads were mainly because of the lack of growth in this industry (IME); and a lack of competitiveness (CSE) and specialization (AE) among firms in the industry between 1990 and 2007. These results imply that Class 1 railroads need to enhance their competiveness by becoming more specialized in the food and kindred products freight industry to improve their profitability in this industry.

Progress 10/01/04 to 09/30/10
Outputs OUTPUTS: This is the final report for this project which terminated September 30, 2010. The authors did have 26 publications and 41 presentations made at various professional and scientific conferences. The information provided through these outlets should result in a more informed and enhanced decision-makers resulting in an efficient and effective use of limited resources. We as the authors also benefited from these publications and presentations. For example, we benefited by the shear interaction with various stakeholders that were interested in our work. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts The information that we generated through our work on various industries and commodities should enhance and encourage stakeholders such as graduate students, researchers, and public and private decision-makers to become more involved in the type of work that we produced over the life of this project especially with bioterroism. Also, the results of this project's output should enable firms to achieve sustainable competitive advantage over their rivals to generate profits that exceed the average for an industry such as the U.S. grain and oilseed industry. By having a sustainable competitive over its rivals, a firm in the grain and oilseed industry can deliver the same benefits as its competitors but a lower price, or deliver benefits that exceed those of its competitors.

Progress 01/01/09 to 12/31/09
Outputs OUTPUTS: Four publications and three presentations were generated in 2009 for this project. The information provided through these outlets should result in improved economic decisions where alternatives are available. Furthermore, the publications and presentations gave us (the authors) an opportunity to interact with various individuals and groups in several different settings including conferences. These settings enabled us to discuss our work and publish it in various media outlets to reach interested stakeholders globally. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: The target audiences included but not limited to graduate students, agriculural economists, grain marketing firms, and public and private decision-makers. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
Impacts Information generated from the publications and presentations will enhance the knowledge of stakeholders such as researchers, graduate students, public and private decision makers, and others about transportation firms, farms and related industries and commodities. The authors were able to quantify the impact of various commodities and industries using shift-share analysis, input/output models, stochastic frontier analyses and market structure, conduct, and performance models. These techniques allowed the authors to provide a better understanding of the sectors and how these sectors have fared over time.

Progress 01/01/07 to 12/31/07
Outputs OUTPUTS: This project is being primarily funded through Hatch/Multi-state NC-1016 funds. I am the Project Leader for this multi-state project for MAFES. This project is continuing. Four publications and 10 papers and presentations were done at professional and scientific outlets under the auspices of this project in the year 2007. In addition, a survey instrument was completed under the management of this PI that deals with the prevention, detection, and response of the grain and oilseed industries to bioterrorism threats. The survey is waiting to be sent to NASS for its final review contingent upon the funding by NC-1016 members. PARTICIPANTS: No Participant information reported. TARGET AUDIENCES: No Target Audiences information reported. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: No Project Modifications information reported.
Impacts Information generated under the auspices of the project titled "Economic Assessment of Changes in Trade Arrangements, Bio- terrorism Threats and Renewable Fuels Requirements on the U.S. Grain and Oilseed Sector" by myself as author or co-author of the publications, services to various organizations, and paper presentations made in 2007 should enable stakeholders of this project whose goals are to achieve sustainable competitive advantage over their rivals to generate profits that exceed the average for U.S. grain and oilseed industry. By having a competitive advantage over its rivals, a firm in grain and oilseed industry can deliver the same benefits as its competitors but at a lower cost, or deliver benefits that exceed those of competing grain and oilseed products. The information and data generated from this project were also presented at various well attended scientific and professional meetings and conferences where interested individuals gave us quite a lot of feedback on our presentations and discussions at those meetings and conferences.

Progress 01/01/06 to 12/31/06
Outputs Several publications and papers were completed and presented at various professional and scientific outlets under the auspices of this project in the year 2006. For example, a study by Fuentes, Couvillion and Allen estimated the cost troporting high-value and perishable commodities between the Southeastern United States and Latin American regions. Results from this analysis reveal that Pentarmaran box ship (PEBOS) is the most appropriate vessel to use for routes between the ports examined in this study. In addition, a second draft of questionnaire that deals with the prevention, detection, and response of the grain and oilseed industries to bioterrorism threats was submitted to the NC-1016 multi-state project members for review. The survey instrument is currently being revised by this researcher to reflect the changes suggested by the NC-1016 committee members.
Impacts Information generated under the auspices of the project titled Economic Assessment of Changes in Trade Arrangements, Bio-terrorism Threats and Renewable Fuels Requirements on the U.S. Grain and Oilseed Sector by the authors of the publications and paper presentations made in 2006 should enable stakeholders whose goals are to achieve sustainable competitive advantage over their rivals to generate profits that exceed the average for U.S. grain and oilseed industry. By having a competitive advantage over the its rivals, a firm in grain and oilseed industry can deliver the same benefits as its competitors but at a lower cost, or deliver benefits that exceed those of competing grain and oilseed products. In addition, information that was engendered as a result of this project would enable stakeholders to implement basic marketing research to assist them with their strategic and tactical decision making activities. Further public and private decision makers can use the data
and information generated under the project when directing their efforts and investments to provide their agribusiness firms with the best available resources at optimal levels of profitability.

Progress 01/01/05 to 12/31/05
Outputs The research activities under this project generated four publications and eight presentations at professional meetings in the year 2005. One of the results from a study by Chowdhury and Allen reveals that the pre- and post-NAFTA comparison indicates that U.S.-Mexico corn trade volume increased significantly in the post-NAFTA era. The econometric analysis completed by the authors did not provide conclusive evidence that such a substantial increase in the post-NAFTA era was solely due to trade liberalization through the NAFTA agreement. The aforementioned publication and others and paper/presentations made at professional meetings are listed below.
Impacts Public and private decision makers can use the data and information generated by the authors of the publications and paper and/or presentations made in 2005 when directing their efforts and investments to provide their agribusiness firms with the best available resources at optimal levels of profitability. In addition, information that was engendered as a result of this project would enable stakeholders to implement basic marketing research, collect data, and analyze the collected data to assist them with their decision making activities. By providing information needed by stakeholders so that they can be better informed about challenges and opportunities facing them in their respective competitive environment, the resulting activities accomplished under this project would be vital to stakeholders by enabling them to make the best decision given their respective circumstances.
