Non Technical Summary
The Gordon Research Conference on Tetrapyrroles is a biennial, interdisciplinary conference, which has stimulated collaborations between animal, plant and micro- biologists, organic and biological chemists and clinicians interested in tetrapyrroles for more than three decades. In association with proteins, tetrapyrroles serve diverse roles as biological redox catalysts, for harvesting light energy, for oxygen activation/delivery and as signaling molecules. This conference represents an important venue for exchange between basic and applied researchers on tetrapyrroles and for refinement of new tools and therapies for development by the biotechnological and biomedical industry. For example, modification of the optical properties of biliprotein photoreceptors is a potential tool for the regulation of the growth and development of agronomically relevant crop plants. The USDA award will permit defraying the conference fees and providing travel support for 6 early career plant biochemists. Participation of young scientists is essential to the vitality of any research area and in this specific case to the development of new tetrapyrrole-based agricultural technologies.

Goals / Objectives
1) To provide a forum for discussion of recent unpublished data by scientists with common interest in the study of the chemistry and biology of tetrapyrrole compounds. 2) To promote the exchange of ideas between established and new investigators from a wide variety of scientific disciplines (e.g., chemists, biologists, biochemists, plant biochemists and physiologists, microbiologists, biotechnologists) by providing ample discussion time following formal presentations, by holding poster sessions which serve as a focus for the discussion of common interests.
Project Methods
The Conference program was selected by the chair after soliciting suggestions for topics and speakers by e-mail from participants in the 2002 conference, by direct consultation with the vice-chair, former chairpersons and a number of other prominent individuals in the field. The program included in this application has been formulated so as to cover major and emerging areas of tetrapyrrole research.

Outputs
2004 GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE on TETRAPYRROLES, CHEMISTRY & BIOLOGY OF The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Tetrapyrroles, Chemistry & Biology of was held 07/25/04 through 07/30/04 at Salve Regina University, Newport, RI. The conference was well attended with 102 participants. The attendees represented the spectrum of endeavor in this field coming from academia, industry, and government laboratories, both US and foreign scientists, senior researchers, young investigators, and students. In designing the formal speakers program, emphasis was placed on current unpublished research and discussion of the future target areas in this field. There was a conscious effort to stimulate lively discussion about the key issues in the field today. Time for formal presentations was limited in the interest of group discussions. In order that more scientists could communicate their most recent results, poster presentation time was scheduled. In addition to these formal interactions, free time was scheduled to allow informal discussions. Such discussions are fostering new collaborations and joint efforts in the field. I want to personally thank you for your support of this Conference. As you know, in the interest of promoting the presentation of unpublished and frontier-breaking research, Gordon Research Conferences does not permit publication of meeting proceedings. If you wish any further details, please feel free to contact me. Thank you. Mark R. OBrian Conference Chair
