Non Technical Summary
A New cotton ginning technology, the Powered Roll Gin Stand, must be constructed according to the optimum configuration for the internal dimensions. B Preliminary research ginning trials in commercial cotton gin plants exhibited mechanical and manufacturing problems that showed that this technology needs designs improvements to be durable enough to withstand the real world conditions of ginning. A Multivariate research studies will be conducted to fully establish the effects and interactions of the numerous operating parameters available because of the new gin stand design technology. B The purpose of this research is to achieve improved designs in several aspects such as the paddle roll drive and roll box configuration which will prove to be durable enough for commercial operation.

Goals / Objectives
The objective of this research is to solve mechanical or manufacturing problems that were found in the prototype kits of the Powered Roll Gin Stand installed in commercial cotton gins in the 2003 season and further optimize the operational parameters of this new technology. This work is a critical pivotal step in ensuring successful adoption of this technology. Adoption by cotton ginners and producers requires that proven equipment and control systems can be manufactured that will withstand real world conditions of 24 hour ginning operations in all kinds of cotton conditions. An additional objective is to continue fine tuning the design and operating parameters and create retrofit kits that can be marketed for the major gin stand models. The Powered Roll Gin Stand will be tested in various regions of the cotton belt to optimize design and operation for different conditions, cotton types, harvest methods and varieties. This work must be done in cooperating commercial
gins in the different regions because of the need for a complete gin system with equipment having a processing capacity compatible with the modern high capacity gin stands currently on the market.
Project Methods
Work will continue on optimizing the operational parameters of the gin stand technology using multivariate research studies to fully establish the effects and interactions of the numerous operating parameters available because of the new gin stand design technology. Specific improvements in equipment design will be investigated: Paddle roll drive: Determine the optimum drive assembly for the paddle roll in each gin stand model for which a retrofit kit is being developed. This will require conducting a design study, building a few different versions, and fitting of the drive assembly for the five major gin stand models in the initial effort The drive assembly needs to also be evaluated through commercial operation in several regions of the cotton belt to develop it for long life and trouble free operation under the conditions found in the ginning season of the different areas. Proper configuration of roll box assembly and gin stand front door. Trial and error work will
be done to determine the optimum configuration of the internal dimensions of the roll box for the different types of ginning ribs and saw sizes. This has to be coordinated with the shape, size, and position of the paddle and seed finger rolls. Adaptation of this new technology to latest model modern high capacity gin stands on the market. Much effort needs to be focused on development of this technology to fit on the most modern models of gin stands on the market and testing to quantify the benefits. While significant results were achieved on some models and promise was shown for benefits on all models a challenge awaits to prove the benefits of this new technology on the some of the newest, most modern models on the market. The status quo must be overcome since current manufacturers are attempting to place skepticm in the market regarding this new technology.
