Progress 07/01/03 to 06/30/04
Outputs An 'Organic Agriculture Symposium' was held 4-5 November 2003 in Denver, Colorado as part of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America (ASA-CSSA-SSSA) 2003 Annual Meetings. The symposium included 35 oral and poster presentations covering research and outreach associated with organic production techniques, policies, and statistics in the United States. There was an overview of the current status of organic research and farming statistics, a discussion on an agroecological basis for organic management, as well as an overview of organic research approaches. Presenters were from land-grant research institutions, federal agencies, and non-profit organizations. Topics included updates on organic farming statistics, grant program opportunities, and summaries of organic research efforts. Long-term organic research and research involving cover crops, compost teas, radio frequency treatments and farmer-driven topics
were presented. Organic pest management strategies and the influence of organic practices on soils and soil processes was also presented. A compact disk (CD) and website containing the abstracts, actual presentations, and/or a proceedings manuscript from each presenter was made. Approximately 500 CDs were distributed at the event, and most of the remaining 500 CDs have been distributed. View the web site at http://www.misa.umn.edu/ by clicking on 'Forum,' then '2003 Organic Ag Symposium.'
Impacts The symposium brought together researchers, agency personnel, and others interested in organic agriculture to view the current status of 35 organic agriculture research and outreach efforts. 1000 CDs were distributed, and the information is available on the internet. This information is being used at the national level to help people make a judgement about the current state of science in this area.
