Progress 10/01/02 to 09/30/03
Outputs The Pacific Northwest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit was established at the University of Washington, College of Forest Resources in 2001. The purpose of the PNW CESU is to provide research, technical assistance and education to federal land management, environmental and research agencies and their potential partners; to develop a program of research, technical assistance and education that involves the biological, physical, social and cultural sciences needed to address resources issues and interdisciplinary problem solving at multiple scales and in an ecosystem context at the local, regional, and national level and to place special emphasis on the working collaboration among federal agencies and universities and their related partner institutions. Cooperating federal agencies include the USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the United States Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency,
Bureau of Reclamation, and National Marine Fisheries. Partner institutions include Heritage College, Oregon State University, Tuskegee University, University of Alaska, University of British Columbia, University of Idaho, University of Oregon, University of Vermont, Washington State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Four new partners were added in 2003: The US Environmental Protection Agency, US Bureau of Reclamation, Southern Oregon University and Alaska Native Science Commission. The 2003 annual meeting was a cooperative venture with the Rocky Mountain CESU hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, WA (a partner in both RM and PNW CESUs). Both CESUs joined together for a 2 day conference sharing lessons learned across organizations.
