Goals / Objectives
To support the North Central Regional Aquaculture Center for aquaculture research, development, and demonstration, for the enhancement of viable and profitable commercial aquaculture production in the United States for the benefit of producers, consumers, and the American economy, and to utilize the regional center in a national program of cooperative and collaborative research, extension, and developmental activities among public and private institutions having demonstrated capabilities in support of commercial aquaculture in the U.S.
Project Methods
The Center will consist of at least a Board of Directors, an Industry Advisory Council, and a Technical Committee. The Board of Directors will submit a Program Plan to USDA outlining each program element and its compatibility with the National Aquaculture Development Plan and with regional priorities. USDA will provide guidance regarding establishment of the Board, work groups, and committees. The Center will submit annual reports of accomplishments and progress in meeting stated priorities to USDA.aq

Outputs
The North Central Regional Aquaculture Center (NCRAC) and fiscal responsibility for its operation are located at Michigan State University. The office of NCRAC's director worked with the office of NCRAC's associate director at Iowa State University to develop and administer programs approved by NCRAC's Board of Directors. Activities revolved around administration of six regional projects: Publications/Extension, 2 Extension (Regional Aquaculture Extension Facilitator and a 'Base' Extension project), Economics/Marketing (Survey for a Regional Co-op and Marketing, Nutrition, and Aquaculture Drugs (17α-methyltestosterone). Eightteen aquaculture research and extension specialists in sixteen regional universities were involved in this work. Research and extension publications were issued by scientists who were under contract with NCRAC to conduct work on projects. These publications were coordinated by the associate director at Iowa State University in accordance with guidelines established by USDA's National Coordinating Council for Aquaculture.

Impacts
The various extension and research activities funded by the North Central Regional Aquaculture Center over the period of this project have generated new technologies and publications that have been of benefit to the aquaculture industry, either by increasing production, decreasing costs, or by providing information that has led to more knowledgeable decisions.
