Non Technical Summary
Federal regulations require that all milk and milk products sold to consumers must comply with safety standards to rule-out contamination and transmission of animal diseases. This project will provide microbiological analytical analysis for grade A and manufacturing raw milk and market milk products, manufactured milk products and products resembling milk products produced and processed by dairies throughout the state of California.

Goals / Objectives
This California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory conducts milk/quality/pathogen testing for the state of California. This is a food safety project which focuses on testing milk and milk products for compliance with safety standards and to rule-out contamination and transmission of animal diseases.
Project Methods
This project will provide microbiological analytical analysis for grade A and manufacturing raw milk and market milk products, manufactured milk products and products resembling milk products produced and processed by dairies throughout the state of California. The following tests are performed: standard plate count, coliform count, California mastitis test (goat milk only), test to detect inhibitory substance, somatic cell count, dairy water, drug resident tests and phosphatase testing of pasteurized milk.

OUTPUTS: The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) provides milk quality testing in accordance with the Food and Agricultural Code Sections 520 through 531 and the State-Federal Cooperative Interstate Milk Shippers (IMS) program. Under this agreement microbiological analytical services are provided for Grade A and manufactured raw milk produced by dairies located throughout the state of California; for market milk products, manufactured milk products, and products resembling milk products processed in the state of California. The CAHFS, serves as the state's Central Milk Laboratory, is responsible for all regulatory compliance testing, administering annual proficiency tests to commercial and Public Health Laboratories, and participation in the US-FDA Drug Residue Surveillance and Laboratory Evaluation Programs. The laboratory additionally participates in state cooperative programs targeted at understanding international implications associated with international movement of legal and illegal dairy products. PARTICIPANTS: United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, California Department of Food and Agriculture, and the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System. TARGET AUDIENCES: State and federal regulatory officials, dairy industries, and national public health. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.
