Goals / Objectives
Provide research, technical assistance and education to federal land management, environmental and research agencies and their potential partners. Develop a program of research, technical assistance and education that involves the biological, physical, social, and cultural sciences needed to address resources issues and interdisciplinary problem-solving at multiple scales and in an ecosystem context at the local, regional, and national level. Place special emphasis on the working collaboration among federal agencies and universities and their related partner institutions.
Project Methods
Coordinated activity between various agencies will direct various approaches appropriate to watersheds, forests, rangelands, resolution conflict, etc.

Progress 08/07/01 to 08/06/06

Outputs
1.Membership: Six partner universities and four federal agency partners were added since the initial proposal was submitted for approval. 2.Strategic Plan: A five year strategic plan was developed using a survey of universities, federal agencies and other cooperators. 3.Meetings: Annual meetings of the CESU were conducted. In addition, a special conference called Great Basin Summit was organized in Elko. 4.Other Activities: A website was developed. List of university faculty expertise was compiled. Periodic updates were sent out to partners. Two CESU federal agency coordinators were hired. Annual reports were provided to CESU council. 5.Renewal: A renewal application was submitted for the next five years and was approved.

Impacts
In the five years, the Great Basin CESU was instrumental in processing over 100 projects (research education and technical assistance) with a total funding of approximately $20M. These projects led to better management of the Great Basin land and related natural resources.

Progress 01/01/05 to 12/31/05

Outputs
GB-CESU added one new university partner (University of Idaho) and three new federal partners (Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Reclamation). The annual manager's meeting, executive committee meeting and the GB-CESU annual meeting were all held in Las Vegas with the largest attendance to date. Total funding through the GB-CESU exceeded $20M over the last five years. Renewal application was developed and sent in for consideration by the CESU Council.

Impacts
Over 100 projects were undertaken by this CESU in the last 5 years. The impacts from the projects are resulting in better information about the Great Basin flora and fauna, improved monitoring procedures and scientifically-based land management decisions.

Outputs
Following items have been accomplished this year: -An annual GB-CESU partners meeting was held in May in Reno -An agency managers meeting was held in October in Elko -Web-site transfer from Utah State to UNR has been accomplished -A GB-CESU brochure has been designed -Boise State University has been added to the GB-CESU -Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition has been added as a cooperator -Work on adding ARS, EPA and BYU is continuing -A joint three CESUs meeting is being organized

Progress 01/01/01 to 12/31/01

Outputs
A meeting of the Great Basin Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (GB-CESU) University Partners and the Federal Managers/Coordinators was held on Oct. 10, 2001. Meeting agenda items included discussions of the administrative organization of the CESU, protocols for the CESU projects and the process for strategic planning. A questionnaire for the needs assessment was developed and sent out to elicit information on research, educational and technical assistance needs in the Great Basin. These needs will be used for developing the strategic plan which is scheduled for Feb. 7-8, 2002.

A web site for the Great Basin CESU is partially developed by Utah State University which is providing information about the CESU. More than five research projects have been sent through the CESU. New National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management coordinators are being hired.
