Progress 06/01/00 to 12/31/04
Outputs The Rural Health, Safety and Security Institute was established to conduct basic and applied reearch into the social, cultural, cognitive and behavioral dimensions of human health, safety, and security relevant for rural populations in America with special emphasis on Mississippi and which appear likely to be addressed successfully through interventions aimed at the modification of behavior patterns. Originally funded in June 2000 through a grant from the Office of Rural Health Policy, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Institute brought together a critical mass of scientists with special expertise in behavioral, organizational, economic and policy issues. In recognition that important research questions involving rural health, safety and security require the combined expertise of numerous disciplines and professions, the Institute, through the SSRC and MSU, has created strategic research alliances to expand its research capacity and horizons. The
Institute made 46 awards for a total of $3,044,491 to support start-up research efforts. The Institutes' researchers submitted 116 proposals for funding by external entities and received 77 awards with budgets totaling $10,595,632. Researchers have published books, book chapters and journal articles and have made numerous presentations at scholarly meetings and before policy makers.
Impacts The Rural Health, Safety and Security Institute produced policy research reports in the areas of physician labor force, Medicaid economic impacts, dental health policy, children's health and academic achievement, tobacco control policy, effects of environmental tobacco control, obesity and mortality which have been made available to policy makers and legislators.

Progress 01/01/01 to 12/31/01
Outputs The Rural Health, Safety, and Security Institute has initiated a number of research endeavors that include an analysis of healthy and unhealthy places in America and a health assessment of the catchments area of the nation's largest rural health system (North Mississippi Health Services); conducted a national survey of the Social Climate for Tobacco Control jointly with the Center for Child Health Research of the American Academy of Pediatrics, focusing on ETS; conducted a national household survey to measure rural/urban variation in mental health and trust levels after 9-11; submitted (Dr. Southward) a grant to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality that was funded to improve the research infrastructure for children in the Delta; developed strategic alliances with both the North Mississippi Health Services and the Center for Child Health Research of the American Academy of Pediatrics; developed a consortia on issues associated with rural families and children
jointly with Center for Child Health Research - University of Rochester Medical School; initiated a national study of early childrearing practices with Wright State Medical School in healthy and unhealthy places in America.
Impacts Research from the assessment of the North Mississippi Health Services area is being utilized to improve health services and modify community outreach by that hospital system. The tobacco climate survey information has assisted in legislation that bans smoking on school grounds and is now being used for policy work on smoke-free workplaces. Our BRIC project is impacting the manner in which information on health and well being is maintained in the Delta Region.
