Progress 05/01/94 to 05/31/04
Outputs In July 2002 the plant vegetation survey and visit to all experimental plots around the NW Alloy Magnesium Smelter plant near Addy, Washington, was conducted. Also alfalfa samples were collected for analysis in the lab. No pollution impacts were found. As was reported in 2003, NW Alloys had temporarily closed ("banked") the plant because of high electricity costs and low magnesium prices (due to competition from China). At that time, we were asked to continue the vegetation and plot surveys. In April 2003, the grantor, NW Alloys, prematurely terminated the project. As a result, no vegetation surveys nor any analysis took place in the summer of 2003; none are planned for the future.
Impacts Expected impacts of this research were to be the proof or absence of pollution when magnesium is produced using the technology employed by the plant.

Progress 10/01/01 to 09/30/02
Outputs In 2002, another vegetation survey and visit to all experimental plots around the NW Alloy Magnesium Smelter plan near Addy, Washington, was conducted in July. Also, alfalfa samples were collected for analysis in the lab. No pollution impacts were found. It should be noted that NW Alloys has temporarily closed ("banked") the plant because of high electricity costs and low magnesium prices (due to competition from China). We were asked to continue the vegetation and plot surveys.
Impacts Expected impacts of this research continue to be the proof or absence of pollution when magnesium is produced using the technology employed by the plant.

Progress 10/01/00 to 09/30/01
Outputs Another vegetation survey was conducted in July 2001. In addition, leaves from surrounding alfalfa fields were collected for tissue analysis in the lab. All 13 plots were visited. The Magnesium producing plant, which is being monitored for pollution, has partly shut down. Plans are to shut it down entirely in October 2001. No pollution impacts from the NW Alloys magnesium smelter were detected either in the plots or from the tissue analysis.
Impacts The NW Alloys plant appears to have no pollution impacts except for some dusting at the north boundary of the plant, well within the plant boundaries.

Progress 10/01/99 to 09/30/00
Outputs Another vegetation survey was conducted in July 2000. All 13 plots were visited. No pollution impacts from the NW Alloys magnesium smelter were detected. Available aerial photos were also interpreted and searched for possible pollution impacts. Some scattered insect impacts were visible. No pattern indicative of pollution was found.
Impacts The NW Alloys plant appears to be producing no major pollution impacts except some dusting at the north boundary of the plant, well within the plant boundaries.

Progress 10/01/98 to 09/30/99
Outputs This project is basically a vegetation monitoring project which was started in 1972. It monitors the potential pollution and impact of a magnesium producing plant in the village of Addy, (South of Colville) in the State of Washington, which was built in 1978 and became fully operational in 1984. The monitoring of the vegetation consists of a yearly ground survey every July (give or take 3 weeks) and a survey using conventional aerial photos when available from the DNR (every 4 years or so). Both surveys look at the forest resource and interspersed range and agricultural crops. The ground survey consists of a visit to 15 ground plots (established in 1972-1973) and looks at the trees and shrub/plant vegetation under the tree cover; in addition it looks at dusting in the village of Addy and the alfalfa and other crops close to the plant. A tissue analysis is carried out at the UW of some alfalfa samples; this crop was selected as an indicator plant. Results to date
indicate very minimal (almost zero) impacts, including minimal dusting of the vegetation downwind and close to the plant (but outside its perimeter). The proposal has been extended through 2004.

Progress 10/01/97 to 09/30/98
Outputs Cooperative Forest Lands Monitoring Project Around Northwest Allots, Inc., Plant Site, Addy, WA. 99100 In July 1998 all 15 plots were revisited and leaf samples were gathered for analysis to show no impacts from the magnesium plant in Addy. There is some evidence of dusting but it is all below the threshold of damage. The usual annual report was submitted to Northwest Alloys. This project will probably be renewed for another 5 year term as it terminates in May 1999. A Proposal to extend this project has been submitted.

Progress 10/01/96 to 09/30/97
Outputs On 30 June - 2 July 1997, the annual vegetation survey was again conducted in and around the Northwest Alloys installation and at sites in the surrounding region. As usual, the latter emphasized the plots established in 1974, which have been surveyed at least once annually since that time, but also included other sites of interest. Wherever possible, four common species of the region--Ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, ninbark, and snowberry-- were observed, along with other plants found at the different locations. Other than the dust effects just mentioned, no evidence of air pollution injury was seen at any location, which is in agreement with the surveys of previous years. The usual annual report was submitted to Northwest Alloys and is on file.

Progress 10/01/95 to 09/30/96
Outputs The fixed sample plots, established in 1972, were resurveyed in 1996. No damage from pollution was recorded or observed. However, some outbreaks of bark beetles and defoliators were observed and will be monitored through 1997. Any annual report was submitted to N.W. Alloys.

Progress 10/01/93 to 09/30/94
Outputs Cooperative Forest Lands Monitoring Project Around Northwest Alloys, Inc., PlantSite, Addy, WA The annual survey of the plots established in 1972 was carried out by the team in July 1994. Leaf and needle samples were collected from alfalfa fields and conifers; and were analyzed for sulfate, sulfite, and fluoride content. Also during the year, sulfide plates on the plots were collected. No pollution impacts from the Northwest Alloys plant in Addy were observed. Since some people in Addy had complained formally about dust emanating from the plant, some leaf samples were taken from gardens in Addy for future analysis and reference. A progress report was filed. both the sulfite/sulfate plates, as well as the tissue sample analyses, continue to indicate the absence of pollution. Aerial photos of the plot region flown in 1994 will be collected and analyzed for further benchmarking of the level of pollution. This project has now been extended until 1999. The next field survey
is scheduled for July 1995. No publications are scheduled.===.
