Goals / Objectives
We propose to establish a Performance Testing Center to evaluate diseases and conditions affecting performance and racing animals, primarily horses. The cornerstone of the Performance Testing Center will be a high speed treadmill capable of speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. Four major areas of study in the Performance Testing Center are planned: Respiratory diseases (breathing problems); Lameness and gait analysis; Fitness and performance testing; Cardiovascular disease.
Project Methods
A SATO (Swedish make) high speed equine treadmill will be purchased and installed to permit clinical and experimental studies of horses in motion. Physiologic monitoring, such as ECG, endoscopy, pulmonary compliance, ventilatory volumes, airflow rates and resistances will be determined in normal and diseased horses.
