Goals / Objectives
Provide laboratory support for infectious and non-infectious diseases or conditions in ruminants and horses for the Veterinary Medical Profession and producers of the State of Louisiana. Provide epidemiological information to users and State/Federal agencies concerning diseases and conditions of ruminant and horses.
Project Methods
Complete essential laboratory services in pathology, microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, mycoplasmology, chlamydiology, virology & parasitology), toxicology and immunology/serology are available. The services available include routine services in each section and special services (electron microscopy in virology and pathology, Toxi-LabR systems in toxicology, mycobacterial cultures in bacteriology) for a total of 127 assays. Data accumulated through these services are maintained on an extensive in-house computer system and reports, statistics and other epidemiological data are generated.

Outputs
OUTPUTS: LADDL is located in a modular building at the north side of the Vet School. Accessions office remains in room 1519 of the main building. In the later part of 2013, LADDL will be moving to a new, larger facility. LADDL recieved 33548 accessions in 2012. This shows an increase of 36% over the previous year. This could be the result of the LADDL offering some new equine tests, as well as the improved state of the economy. The food animal for this period is 18801. It's a 20% increase over 2011. 44% of the total accessions are equine cases. The aquatic unit processed 143 cases, on the average involving 3-5 specimen per submission. PARTICIPANTS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period. TARGET AUDIENCES: The general public, including practioners, farmers & animal owners. We service all over the US, and serveral foreign countries. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Nothing significant to report during this reporting period.

Impacts
The early diagnosis & prevention of illness and disease of domestic, as well as farm animals.

Outputs
OUTPUTS: The LADDL is located in a modular building at the north side of the vet school. Accessions office remains in room 1519 of the main building, next to necropsy. LADDL accessions for 2011 are 21444. This represents a 3.6% decrease from 2010. It is most likely the result of the slow economic recovery of the state and the country overall. The food animal for this period is 15051. (not including poultry and fish). This shows an increase of 9.5% over 2010, 51% of the total accessions are equine cases. The aquatic unit processed 203 cases, on the average involving 3-5 specimen per submission. PARTICIPANTS: Not relevant to this project. TARGET AUDIENCES: the general public, including practitioners, farmers and owners of animal. Our services are utilized by clients from all over the US and several foreign countries. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Not relevant to this project.

Impacts
The diagnosis and prevention of illness and disease of domestic, and farm animals. Early prevention and treatment can save the state from an economic disaster.

The food animal for this period is 13631 (not including poultry & fish). 37% of the total accessions are equine cases, with 17% being EIA's. The aquatic diagnostic unit processed 113 submissions, usually involving 3-5 specimen per submission. PARTICIPANTS: Not relevant to this project. The workshop was attended by over 20 individuals representing five southern states. The Laboratory underwent its 5-year accreditation site visit from the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. Finally, a chlamydia was isolated from an abortion in a dairy cow that was found to be identical to a strain found in pigeons. The isolate has been sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, IA.

Progress 01/01/95 to 12/30/95

Outputs
1995 had a 1.8% increase in specimen submissions in all species. 6,400 cases were from food and equine species. This last year saw a considerable increase in the relative importance and number of submissions for Equine Infectious Anemia testing following the requirement by state officials for mandatory testing of horses for EIA and the euthanasia of positive horses. In addition, the laboratory organized and presented a one-day training course on food safety of foods of animal origin for the state lay meat inspectors. Courier pickup of laboratory samples was also expanded.

Progress 01/01/93 to 12/30/93

Outputs
1993 had 6.2% increase in specimen submissions in all species. 7400 cases were from food and equine species. The LDAF formalized an equine identification program on all equids presented for public sale in association with the mandatory EIA testing; the LAVMDL will be the sole slaughter/sale EIA testing lab for Louisiana. Other disease problems evaluated through 1993 were bovine tuberculosis and porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome. The lab continued involvement in assisting the LDAF in developing disease testing requirement for farm raised deer and in developing regulation for ratites. The LAVMDL assumed a greater responsibility for food safety testing for seafood and aquaculture (alligator and nutria) meat products.
