Non Technical Summary
The International Phytobiomes Conference 2024 (Phytobiomes 2024) - Harvesting the Future: Bridging Phytobiomes, Agriculture and Climate is an international conference that brings together a broad community of U.S. and international researchers and scientists from the public and private sector to collectively advance the newly emerging field of phytobiomes research.A Phytobiome is a plant (phyto-) in a distinct geographical unit (-biome). Phytobiome research is a system-level approach focused on the complex interactions between plants, micro- and macro-organisms, soils, climate, environment, and management practices that affect the sustainable production of plants. Understanding the diverse and dynamic processes within phytobiomes is essential for ensuring the sustained health and productivity of crops, plant ecosystems, and, ultimately, consumers of plants and plant products. Phytobiomes 2024 will be held November 19-21, 2024 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. This unique and multidisciplinary conference will advance the community's knowledge of the diverse disciplines focusing on phytobiomes and build momentum to apply this knowledge in an integrative, collaborative way to increase the sustainable production of food, feed, and fiber while minimizing losses from pests, pathogens, and environmental stresses.

Goals / Objectives
The main goal of thePhytobiomes 2024Conference is to bring together a broad community of U.S. and international scientists from the public and private sector as well as agricultural stakeholders (e.g., growers) to collectively advance the emerging field of phytobiome science. This in person conferenceempowersthisbroad community ofscientiststo focus on the following objectives:Explore the latest discoveries in a breadth of relevant disciplines, including interactions between microbiomes and other phytobiome components.Identify basic and applied research priorities to continue to develop a rigorous science-based foundation of phytobiome science.Advance solutions to overcome threats to our global supply of food, feed, and fiber, particularly in the face of climate change, and help growers increase the sustainability of production into the future. Identify experimental, resource and technology needs or gaps that, if overcome, will hasten advancement in phytobiome research and translation.Increase communication and relationships across disciplines, national and international regions, and public and private partners by providing an in-person venue for discussions on phytobiome science.Forge collaborative public-private partnerships to address knowledge and resource gaps.Explore and increase awareness of the regulatory requirements for commercializing microbial products at the state, national, and international levels.Introduce and increase the understanding of linkages among plants, microbes, and animal health.Provide students and postdoctoral fellows an opportunity to showcase their work and gain an increased understanding of the range of research fields and job opportunities related to phytobiomes.
Project Methods
The International Phytobiomes 2024 Conference is proposed for November 19-21, 2024, in St. Louis, MO, USA, and will cover a broad range of disciplines involved in understanding the complexity of plant-based ecosystems. Participation will be open to anyone with an interest in phytobiome research. Among others, we will extend specific invitations to representatives of relevant State and Federal agencies (e.g., USDA-ARS, USDA-APHIS, US-EPA, US-FDA, US-NIFA, US-NSF, US-DOE, FFAR, BBSRC, INRAE, the European Commission, CSIRO, Genome Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), national and international scientific societies, and industry. A public announcement for Phytobiomes 2024 was issued in February 2024. This announcement was posted on phytobiomesalliance.org and the Alliance social media channels. A direct email invitation via MailChimp was also sent to the database of attendees of previous phytobiome meetings, workshops, webinars, and conferences. We expect 100-150 participants from around the globe. Through advertising and outreach, early career awards, speaker selection and travel support, we will seek to ensure a highly diverse audience. We have also developed a conference website (phytobiomesconference.org) that is serving as the main hub for registration and all conference materials. Speaker profiles and presentations are posted on the website. A program booklet will be printed and handed out to all registered attendees. The Phytobiomes 2024 program will open with a discussion about Phytobiomes and Farm Sustainability. This will highlight production agriculture operations using innovative methods and technologies that enhance their farm productivity and sustainability. Our Conference Organizing Committee (COC) is a 17-member committee comprised of the proposal PIs, members of the Alliance Board (Board) and Coordinating Committee (CC), and a 3-person Local Organizing Committee (LOC). This COC provides guidance on the overall direction of the event, session topic areas, plenary and session speakers, and selects the early career awards. The LOC provides expertise and knowledge about the local community, venues, catering, and transportation. Committee members were carefully selected based on the need for diverse scientific disciplines, balance between academia and industry, and local members from the St. Louis, MO, area.
