Non Technical Summary
The availability of USDA NIFA Resident Instruction and Distance Educationfunding has allowed the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) - Agriculture,Community, and Natural Resources division (ACNR) to take immediate steps as well as developlong-term measures to address the disparities faced. There is an increase in enrollments, numberof ACNR graduates, students receiving scholarships and stipends, and students participating inexperiential learning programs. There are also 3 full time instructors in the ACNR department, aswell as professional development opportunities for faculty and staff. Continued support fromDEG will help to ensure further successes in ACNR's long-term measures. The project goalsfocuses on 2 Educational Need Areas (ENA) -Instructional Delivery Systems and FacultyPreparation & Enhancement for Teaching. With the ENAs as a guiding tool, the objectives of theproject are: to encourage use of alternative delivery systems and computer-lab equipment;enhance capacity of ACNR student lab and quality of instruction program, provide scholarshipsfor faculty and staff pursuing degrees in the FANH sciences, and to provide financial support forfaculty and staff professional development. These objectives will help ACNR meet its outcomesand overall NIFA objectives of increasing the number and diversity of students pursing degreesin the food, agriculture, natural resources and human (FANH) sciences, and enhancing thequality of postsecondary instruction to help meet current and future workplace needs.

Project Methods
ENA Instruction Delivery SystemMethodology: Steps for achieving Objective• Step 1: Encourage use of alternative methods of instruction delivery systems: ACNR willcontinue to maintain its "Student Learning Center" by having a full-time student labtechnician- to oversee the lab and provide technical support to students, faculty, and staff.The lab technician will be under the supervision of the MIS Manager. Funding will also helpto pay partial salary of teaching assistant who supports instructional programs.• Step 2: Enhance student lab capability: DEG funds will also be used to purchase equipment(computers, peripherals, printers, etc.) for the enhancement of the student lab and instructionprogram and for the support of student research projects, assignments, fieldwork, andoutreach.Evaluation Method: Log number of student users and maintain the computers and network.Program and student data, records and related documents2. ENA Faculty Preparation & Enhancement for TeachingMethodology: Steps for achieving Objective• Step 1: ACNR will provide funding for off-island scholarships for faculty and staff who meeteligibility and merit requirements to enroll in distance education and on-campus programstowards undergraduate and graduate/professional degrees• Step 2: We will also provide financial assistance towards professionaldevelopment for faculty and staff.Evaluation: For scholarships, ACNR will track academic progress. We will also keep data,certifications and documents related to faculty and staff professional development.
