The 1890 USDA (David Scott) Scholarship is an excellent initiative by the USDA and has led to the increase in the number of agriculture professionals for careers or entrepreneurship in the nation. We are now awarding this scholarship to students enrolled in the new agriculture education degree beginning in fall 2024. The success of the 1890 USDA will continue to significantly increase the competitiveness of US agriculture and the provision of quality foods and fiber or agriculture production and related outputs/services in the nation.

Goals / Objectives
Recruit qualified individuals into the bachelor's in an agriculture degree program at LU.Attract and award scholarships to minorities and underrepresented qualified individuals.Increase the technical competencies of scholarship recipients in the food and agricultural sciences and related fields.To advance US agriculture through hands-on/experiential learning research activities, fieldwork, seminars, professional conferences, internships, etc.Specifically, the 1890 scholarship is for individuals at Lincoln University who:Have been accepted for admission at LU.Will be enrolled at LU not later than one year after the date of acceptance.Intend to pursue a career in the food and agricultural sciences, including a career in agribusiness, energy and renewable fuels, or financial management.Have a minimum cumulative 2.8 grade point average (GPA) at the time of application and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA on a semester and cumulative basis while receiving scholarship support.
Project Methods
Review of scholarship applications by the committee and award to qualified freshmen students.Scholars will participate during field days on the Lincoln University campus - three farms, labs, greenhouses, etc. to gain knowledge and experience.Agriculture literacy day for freshmen (new students including scholars are introduced to faculty and staff in the college of agriculture; students will participate in introductory activities at the various labs, farms, etc. to strengthen their understanding/knowledge).Involve scholars in experiential learning - multi-disciplinary research activities in various Ag sub-disciplines to enhance their knowledge and experience. Research findings potentially will be presented at conferences or disseminated through peer-reviewed articles.Scholars engaged in extension activitiesScholars and other undergraduate students employed in the college as student workers and paid a stipendMentoring - All scholars are attached to faculty and advisors for mentoring and progress in their academic pursuitsEvaluate the scholarship programSubmit yearly report/scholarship update or final report to NIFA-USDA.
