Non Technical Summary
The long-term goal of the Aquaponics (AP) Bootcamp program is to utilize "3-I" levels (Intensive, Intermediate, Introductory), 3 areas (aquaponics, aquaculture, and related business and marketing) and 3 types (hands-on, classroom/mentoring, and internet/webinar) of integrated training and multi-faceted approach, paired with mentoring of industry professionals and previous aquaculture bootcamp participants, to enhance the sustainability of limited-resource new and beginning aqua-farmers and to assist them to overcome post-COVID-19 challenges in the Appalachian region. This will be accomplished through the development and delivery of a multi-phase program in which new and limited-resource aquaponic/aquaculture farmers with different knowledge levels gain classroom and hands-on individual and group training. The training will include new skills and innovations required to own and operate an aquaponic farm sustainably and successfully. The specific goals of the project will be achieved through partnerships and collaborations of three nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs), as well as five aquaponics/aquaculture farms and three universities, led by The Ohio State University (OSU), and three NGOs/CBOs with expertise in new and beginning farmer training and outreach.

Project Methods
Aquaponics (AP)Bootcamp will utilize and apply a modified model of the successful Aquaculture Bootcamp in the underserved region of Appalachia. During AP Bootcamp, we will offer limited resource new and beginning farmers in this region "3-I" levels, 3 areas and 3 types of integrated training in aquaponic production and business management strategies. The "3-I levels" are: Intensive, an in-depth level involving immersion in a year-long, hands-on training and classroom/mentoring program; Intermediate, a mid-level involving participation in a variety of learning activities and workshops; and Introductory, a general or entry level participation where sharing of information is the goal, involving participation in the AP Bootcamp online videos, an annual conference, and educational tools. The "3 areas" are aquaponics, aquaculture, and related business and marketing. The "3 types" are hands-on, classroom/mentoring, and internet/webinar. We will conduct the 3-I levels, 3 areas, and 3 types of integrated training in OH, KY and WV in Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3, and the new and beginning farmers in Appalachia can attend any training that is close to their home in these states.
