Non Technical Summary
The overarching goal of the RUSH DVM (Rural and Under-Represented Scholarship for HopefulDVM Students) program is to provide scholarships to recruit, engage, retain, mentor and traincommitted underrepresented scholars resulting in DVM degrees at K-State College of VeterinaryMedicine (Program Area MSP, Discipline Codes V and N). Students entering the veterinaryprofession in the U.S. are white (76.5%) females (83.2%) from suburban setting (49.3%).Underrepresented students include students of color, male students and those from ruralbackgrounds. This program will contribute to the reduction of the disparity amongunderrepresented and underserved populations entering the DVM program to better reflect the U. S.demographics and remain globally competitive as a leader in animal health and food production. Thescholarship will promote student success within food and agricultural disciplines at the professionalDVM level. Through the 4 year DVM program, enrolled students will develop critical thinking andcommunication skills, grow in leaderships skills and work within the ethical and professionalstandards expected in the field of veterinary medicine. Mentoring and shadowing opportunities willbe made available to participants as well as opportunities for outreach and training. Studentsparticipating in the RUSH DVM program will graduate with a lower debt load and the program willfoster economic opportunity in their futures.The addition of the Special Experiential Learning (SEL) funds that can be used for livingexpenses, travel expenses, additional tuition and/or a cash stipend for SEL-supported scholarswill allow recipients to participate in programs to further their education and specialize theirexperiences.

Project Methods
Students applying for the DVM program at K-State College of Veterinary Medicine are selectedfor interview by reviewing the academic profile and multiple areas of experience. Theexperience categories include veterinary medicine, animal, extracurricular activities, researchexperience, volunteer/community service and employment history. By taking experiences intoaccount, a more holistic approach is taken to application evaluation. Academics is not the onlyfactor considered when reviewing applications as we realize students involved in multipleactivities or employment have desired skills of time management and responsibility. Onceinterview invitation occurs, the remainder of the application is reviewed and an interview date isset. Following interview, all pieces of an application are put together to determine offer. Oncean offer occurs in early February each year, we will review applicants for scholarship offers forthe RUSH DVM program. Being able to offer scholarships to students of diverse backgroundswill result in elevated enrollment for the student demographics outlined in the proposal. Ifstudents know a portion of their scholarship commitment from this program with the additionalSpecial Experiential Learning (SEL) funding ahead of accepting their offer, they are more likelyto accept.

The scholarship will promote student success within food and agricultural disciplines at the professional DVM level. Through the 4 year DVM program, enrolled students will develop critical thinking and communication skills, grow in leaderships skills and work within the ethical and professional standards expected in the field of veterinary medicine. Mentoring and shadowing opportunities will be made available to participants as well as opportunities for outreach and training. Students participating in the RUSH DVM program will graduate with a lower debt load and the program will foster economic opportunity in their futures. Nothing Reported What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Each application cycle, 5 scholarships will be distributed to recruit and retain rural and underrepresented students to the DVM program at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Each recipient will also receive $2,375 for Travel expenses to a professional conference or meeting and one student will recieve the Specialized Expereiential funds of $4,000.

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? Five scholarships were awarded to incoming DVM students meeting the criteria of the proposal.
