Non Technical Summary
To address the educational problem, our AGFEI project seeks to strengthen research and experiential learning opportunities for students in the plants and animal sciences areas. The focus will be on improving and enhancing current facilities within the American Samoa Community College - Agriculture, Community, and Natural Resources division. More specifically, our Piggery Unit and Fruits for Life Greenhouse - two facilities most commonly used by students and staff for research, field work, and student projects. Our objectives are to repair, remodel and provide equipment/supplies for both the piggery unit and greenhouse. Improvement in these facilities will provide more opportunities and accessible, quality resources and tools for students to engage in research, field activities, and other hands-on experiences. The overarching goal of our AGFEI project is to enhance the quality of post-secondary education provided through our Agriculture, Community, and Natural Resources (ACNR) Instructions program. Students will be better prepared to enter 4-year degree programs at colleges and universities in the U.S., to eventually pursue graduate and professional degrees in the food, agricultural, natural resources and human sciences (FANH), and to enter the workforce. This will also lead to an increase in the diversity and number of students who are recruited into the program, and major and graduate in these hard to fill areas. Thus, our project will help fulfill three NIFA Education Need areas - Scientific Instrumentation for teaching and Research, Student Experiential Learning, and Student Recruitment, Retention, and Educational Equity.
