Non Technical Summary
Use of alternative feedstuffs has a significant potential to expand the swine industry, and enhance environmental and economic sustainability, in Hawaii and other Pacific islands. Hawaii agricultural products such as macadamia nut, papaya, tree leaf meals, taro root, sweet potatoes, banana and by-products from other local agricultural activities such as wheat millrun, macadamia nut press cake, molasses, sugar cane leaves, fish processing wastes, and anticipated bio-fuel by-products could together provide the basis for producing more affordable locally-manufactured feeds. However there is very limited or no information on the nutritional value of potential feedstuffs available locally, which limits their use in routine swine feed formulation. Thus, detailed information on the availability and nutritional value of these potential local feedstuffs is needed before considering them for sustainable swine nutrition planning in Hawaii.

Goals / Objectives
In its broadest context, this project includes the development of support resources and enabling technologies that will result in a series of reports and electronic prediction technologies (or models) on nutrient requirements for all species of agricultural animals as well as a feed database that can be accessed and used by the research community.
Initial implementation objectives will be to:
Meet the urgent need for updated synthesized information and technologies on animal nutrition and produce a continual stream of updates on a routine basis
Establish and maintain an effective coordinating group of animal nutritionists
Establish and maintain at least two working species-specific technical committees at all times
Project Methods
Identification of the potential local feedstuffs, both agricultural products and by-products from different agricultural activities will be done using a participatory approach by interaction with researchers, farmers, animal industry and other stakeholder. Feedstuffs will be selected based on the potential of their availability and sustainability. Selected feedstuffs will be characterized for their nutritional content. The digestibility of the selected feedstuffs will be estimated using 2-step and 3-step in vitro enzymatic digestion. The feedstuffs with potential fermentable fibers will be evaluated for their fermentability using in vitro cumulative gas production techniques, simulating large intestine of the pigs. Database will be developed for the nutrient profile and digestibility and fermentability of feedstuffs, which will be made available for research/industry community, to be used in nutrition programing.

Progress 12/01/10 to 09/30/14

Outputs
Target Audience: Meetings and interaction program were organized with stakeholders (farmers, industry partners, professionals) to discuss on the animal feed situation in Hawaii. Altogether 4 workshop/meetings were organized on different Islands of Hawaii to identify the potential local feedstuffs that can be used in swine feeding program. Samples of different local feedstuffs (like Macadamia nut cake, cassava, sweat potato, wheat bran, papaya, banana, taro root) were collected from different Islands which were characterized for their nutritional contents. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? A graduate student was partly trained from this project. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? *The results of the study was presented in the Student Research Symposium (April 11-12, 2014), CTAHR, UH Manoa. *An interaction meeting with farmers were done and the findings were shared. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? The project was able to identify some local feedstuffs and determined their nutritional value for Swine in Hawaii.

    Outputs
Target Audience: Participation on this project started on May 1, 2013. Thus the report covers the period between May 1, 2013 to Sep 30, 2013. During this period, meetings and interaction program were organized with stakeholders (farmers, industry partners, professionals) to discuss on the animal feed situation in the Hawaii.Altogether 4 workshop/meetings were oraganized on different Islands of Hawaii to identify the potential local feedstuffs that an be ued in swine feding program. Samples of different local feedstuffs (like Macadamia nut cake, cassava, sweat potato, wheat bran, papaya, banana, taroroot) were collected from different Islands which are being characterized for their nutrtitional contents. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? Nothing Reported How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Nothing Reported What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? The collected samples are being characterized for their nutrtitional content, which will provide information about the feedstuffs and their potential to use in swine feeding program.

    Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? Problem on Swine feeding on Hawaiian Islands were identified by discussion with stakeholders.
