Non Technical Summary
Parenting behaviors, attitudes, and styles have been identified as contributing to the continuing high rates of childhood obesity and overweight. Research is needed that compares the relation to childhood obesity and overweight of parenting behaviors, attitudes, and styles that are focused on food with those that characterize aspects of family life other than meals and eating.

Goals / Objectives
Objective #3: To assess parent-child interactions in the target population as they relate to key behaviors identified as being associated with resilience to overweight. Objective #4: Determine appropriate tools to effectively measure salient behavioral differences between low-income families in the parent-child relationships identified in Objective 3 for the community setting. Objective #5: Design a framework for prevention strategies targeting the development of resilience behaviors.
Project Methods
Objective #3: To assess parent-child interactions in the target population as they relate to key behaviors identified as being associated with resilience to overweight. Method - W1005 Pilot Questionnaire includes 1. Assessment of parenting styles. Parenting Behavior Questionnaire - Head Start (40 items). (Coolahan K, McWayne C, Fantuzzo J, Grim S. Validation of multidimensional assessment of parenting styles for low-income African-American families with preschool children. Early Childhood Research Quarterly. 2002 Fal;17(3):356-373.) 2. Assessment of parental feeding behaviors - Child Feeding Questionnaire (3 items). (Birch LL et al. Confirmatory factor analysis of the Child Feeding Questionnaire: a measure of parental attitudes, beliefs and practices about child feeding and obesity proneness. Appetite. 2001 36(3):201-210.) 3. Assessment of parental feeding style - Child Feeding Styles Questionnaire (19 items). (Hughes SO, Power TG, Orlet Fisher J, Mueller S, Nicklas TA. Revisiting a neglected construct: parenting styles in a child-feeding context. Appetite. 2005 Feb;44(1):83-92. Epub 2004 Nov 13.) 4. Assessment of demographics - Questions from Demographic Information Questionnaire and other measures Objective #4: Determine appropriate tools to effectively measure salient behavioral differences between low-income families in the parent-child relationships identified in Objective 3 for the community setting Methods will be adapted after the pilot study using the methods under objective #3 is completed Objective #5: Design a framework for prevention strategies targeting the development of resilience behaviors. Methods will be adapted after final tools are identified.

Progress 10/01/09 to 09/30/10

Outputs
OUTPUTS: Status of Participation in W1005 Pilot Test A - Revised IRB application and materials have been resubmitted to OSU IRB - After W1005 meeting, the research team requested permission to obtain weights of children from Head Start Center directors (so that W1005 would have validation of maternal perceptions in the W1005 data set) - Also have identified private rooms in two Head Start centers in which we can weigh mothers (the major concern of OSU IRB) - We have full cooperation from two Head Start center directors with 10-15 Latino (and more Caucasian) mothers per center. Dissemination (Outreach) - Outreach to Extension Educators Reality 101: Parenting and Child Obesity. Presentation for Oklahoma Extension Educators at Oklahoma State University, January 19, 2010 Extension research updates Hubbs-Tait, L. & Sommer, K. (2010, September).
