Non Technical Summary
Muscadine is an emerging industry with potentials for becoming an important commercial crop in the United States. However, production, economic and marketing information for the crop is still limited. Thus far Georgia is the largest producer of muscadine grapes and other states are following this trend.Interested growers do not have enough information to make better business decisions. Our research will provide information that would increase producer's acceptability to grow the crop and consumer's willingness to buy (WTB).Muscadine is also used as fresh and for wine production. This research will unravel the myth surrounding the production and marketing of muscadine and will give potential growers and stakeholders' the information they need to know about this new industry.Organic production has also become a huge market especially for health conscious consumers.Growers are interested in taking advantage of this high demand organic and natural products but due to so many production problems including high cost of weed control, pest and diseases, growers are interested in knowing in the return on investment is negative of positive. Our research provide the information needed to make better business decision in what organic crops to grow and which good production practices will improve yields, quality and profitability. There's enormous interest for small and limited resources farmers, part time farmers and master gardeners in the southeast region to adopt bananas production and marketing as a potential commercial crop. The discovery of short circle and cold hardy cultivars by UGA, Auburn and FAMU researchers has made it possible to grow this specialty crop for food production, ornamental, landscape and nursery use. Growers were eager to see the profit potential, thus increasing the need for an economic analysis of one of the promising variety "Veinte Cohol".

Goals / Objectives
Develop demand and market valuation models for the produce sector that can be used to evaluate effects of increasingly complex product differentiation schemes (organic, enhanced health claims, biodynamic), trade, commodity marketing programs, labeling programs (local, food miles, Fair Trade), traceability systems, and food safety events in the U.S. produce markets. Analyze the relative benefits and costs, to producers and consumers, of government and industry-led marketing and policy programs (certifications, Country of origin labeling, farmers markets, California/Arizona Leafy Greens Marketing Agreements) using both theoretical approaches and empirical evidence from multi-state applied research projects. Assess the changing coordination and supply chain management strategies being implemented in the fruit and vegetable sector and identify strategic organizational and marketing implications for a set of firms that are diverse in terms of commodity, marketing approach and size of operation (including small and mid size farms).
Project Methods
Primary and secondary data was collected for all the research. Data for tomato yellow leave curl virus (YLCV) and thrips studies were collected from three years of field research at the University of Georgia, Tifton Campus. Yield data was obtained from harvested tomatoes in the field. Additional data used to develop various enterprise economic analysis and budgets for fruits and vegetables were obtained from agricultural vendors. Historical data was obtained from USDA/ERS statistics.

    Progress 10/01/15 to 09/30/16

    Outputs
Target Audience:1. Increase growers' knowledge on the environmental and economic costs of transitioning to organic production via a sod-based rotation and strip tilling in the Southern Coastal Plain. This increased knowledge is a necessary and sufficient condition for increased net revenue of the enterprise. 2. Provided fruits and vegetable farmers with badly needed information by analyzing and determining profitability margin of selected enterprises. This information is useful for making their daily business decisions and determining which enterprise provide higher returns on investments (ROI). The information provided is also useful to farmers, county agents, financial institutions, lenders and some governmental organizations. 3. Increased producers knowledge on improved agricultural practices (GAP), disease identification, postharvest/total quality management (TQM)via field training, This would translate to increased yields and quality which will eventually command better prices for quality product and increased profits, household income and improved livelihood. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Several presentations and workshops have been provided to farmers, agents, specialists and professionals in the USA and abroad. For instance, a paper entitled "Evaluation of organic cool season vegetable rotations in Georgia: first and second cut kale trials in Georgia" was presented at the Southern Associatin of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) Conference in San Antonio, TX in 2016. Another results/paper entitled "Market and economic consideration for new crops" was presented at the Southeast Regional Fruit & Vegetable Conference in Savanna, Georgia in January 2016. A presentation entitled "Cost estimates and investment analysis for muscadine grapes productin in Georgia" was presented at the Food Distribution Research Society Annual Conference in Philadelphia in 2015. Internationally, a paper entitled USAID Agricultural Value Chain for Bananas in India" was presented at the United States Consulate General Global Affairs Office in Kolkata, India in 2015 while a paper entitled "Bangladesh Banana Industry: Challenges and Out of the Box Solutions" was presented at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 2015. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Via presentations, handouts, and various publications such as journal articles, bulletins, extension publications, trade papers, posters and abstracts disseminated during after the report years. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Continue doing research, collecting data and publishing more research and extension reports.

    Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? We collaborated in a grant entitled "Environmental and Economic Costs of Transitioning to Organic Production via a Sod-Based Rotation and Strip Tilling in the Southern Coastal Plain". This was/is a multistate and multi-institutions collaboration involving FL, GA, MS and AL. We equally collaborated on a USDA NIFA SCRI entitled "Disease-Resistant Seedless Muscadine Grape Cultivars Utilizing Eco- and Consumer-Friendly Cisgenic Modification Technologies". This involved researchers from FL, GA, TN, UT, MS, USDA ARS, Virgin Island etc., with Dennis J. Gray as PI, UFl/IFAS, Apopka. I was also involved in a SARE Grant entitled "Evaluation of crop rotation and varieties for high value vegetable production in organic and sustainable systems" with George Boyhan as PI. I have been involved in analyzing benefits and costs for the following leafy greens and fruits: cabbage, kale, collards, eggplants, watermelon and Muscadine respectively via enterprise budget. I also conducted a USAID/DAI Banana Agricultural Value Chain (AVC) studies in Bangladesh and a similar studies for India.
