Non Technical Summary
In 2004, Auburn University was invited by the World Food Programme (WFP) to become its lead academic partner in a student-focused war on hunger campaign. The partnership has resulted in an educational "best practices" model that addresses short-term grassroots (i.e., awareness/fundraising and advocacy) and long-term academic (i.e., teaching, research, and outreach) solutions to ending both domestic and global hunger and malnutrition. Further, the Auburn/WFP alliance has led to approximately 300 higher education institutions in the U.S. and abroad mobilizing under the banner of Universities Fighting World Hunger (UFWH). In order for Auburn to continue to lead the war on hunger and expand Universities Fighting World Hunger, the following priorities have been established as an action agenda: (1) building strategic partnerships; (2) bolstering the UFWH network; (3) fostering education, commitment, and engagement; and (4) assessing the movement. In order to bolster the UFWH network, Auburn must maintain an effective recruitment and stewardship campaign. This includes making professional presentations, developing a robust communications and social media strategy, and attending/sponsoring exhibits at national and/or international conferences. Therefore, Auburn respectfully requests that USDA award the institution a grant in the sum of 12,000 dollars to be used to assist with travel expenses for participation in the following: 1) 2012 European Association of International Educators Conference in Dublin, Ireland; (2) 8th annual UFWH Summit in Kansas City, KS; (3) the World Food Prize in Des Moines, IA; and (4) travel to recruit minority universities in Alabama and Tennessee.

Goals / Objectives
Universities Fighting World Hunger (UFWH) is a dynamic coalition of colleges and universities, led by Auburn University, that is fostering a grassroots student movement of hunger awareness and advocacy and promoting an academic agenda that utilizes innovative curriculum development, multi-disciplinary research, new generation technologies, and outreach initiatives to find long-term solutions to ending hunger. The goal of this project is to enable Auburn to utilize a NIFA travel grant in the amount of 12,000 dollars to recruit new colleges and universities into UFWH while continuing to support and bolster the activism of the 300 institutions who have already joined. In addition to an effective communications and marketing strategy, this involves making professional presentations and sponsoring exhibitions at national and international conferences, making site visits to select campuses, and attending professional meetings that enable the UFWH leadership team at Auburn to stay current on hunger-related issues and to engage with peer institutions and other stakeholder groups who are focused on ending hunger.
Project Methods
Funds from the project will be used to recruit new members and bolster the UFWH network by: 1)exhibiting on behalf of UFWH at the European Association of International Educators Conference in Dublin, Ireland, September 11-14, 2012; 2)participating in the annual World Food Prize and Borlaug Dialogue, Des Moines, IA, October17-19, 2012; and 3)participating in the 8th Annual Universities Fighting World Hunger Summit, Kansas City, KS, March 2-4, 2013. In addition, Auburn University continues to seek more effective methods for engaging minority-serving institutions to join UFWH. A portion of funds will be committed to regional travel for meetings with HBCU administrators, including a call for minority institutions in Alabama to become involved in the state's new initiative for ending child hunger.

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? EAIE: European Association of International Educators 2012 Conference & Expo The decision to attend the EAIE conference in lieu of NAFSA in 2012 was based on two reasons. First, during the 2011 NAFSA conference, the Auburn UFWH leadership team was invited by i-student group, a digital marketing agency based in the United Kingdom, to share exhibit space (pro bono) to promote UFWH at the annual EAIE meeting in Dublin, Ireland, September 11-14, 2012. Secondly, the opportunity to exhibit at a conference in Europe provided an excellent opportunity to establish an expanded UFWH footprint beyond North and Central America into additional regions that have great potential for UFWH student mobilization, development of best practices in human sustainability, and partnerships with U.S. universities. The major outcomes of the EAIE Conference & Expo included: Visits to the UFWH exhibit booth by hundreds of EAIE participants, providing an opportunity for UFWH to gain wide exposure, especially among European, Australian, and Asian colleges and universities Addition of new members to the UFWH coalition outside of North America Preliminary discussions with a representative from the African Union in regard to a UFWH summit on the African continent Recruitment of participants for the Why Care? campaign, a UFWH social media campaign in conjunction with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and WFP 2012 Borlaug Dialogue/World Food Prize Because the event is the foremost conference and award ceremony devoted to food security, it provided an excellent opportunity to advance the UFWH mission, bolster the network, and lay the foundation for future partnerships by interfacing with academic scholars, leaders from the corporate and non-profit world, international agency representatives, and a variety of other hunger activists. Outcomes of meetings that were most significant for UFWH partnership building and expansion of the network included: Future Farmers of America—UFWH continued discussions begun in the past with FFA on how to utilize its extensive network as a school feeder for UFWH World Food Prize Youth Institute—Giles and youth institute director began preliminary discussions on ways to involve UFWH campuses like Auburn in the expansion of state-wide youth institutes Farm Journal Foundation—Meeting at the World Food Prize with Farm Journal representatives led to a second meeting in Washington, DC to discuss partnership opportunities between UFWH and HungerU. (HungerU, an initiative of the Farm Journal Foundation, is a mobile college tour designed to educate students about food insecurity and the role American agriculture can play in eradicating hunger.) Farm Journal was a sponsor of the 8th Annual UFWH Summit, and HungerU is scheduled to be on the Auburn campus for the 9th Annual UFWH Summit. US Agency for International Development (USAID)---UFWH and USAID have begun collaborating on the cross-promotion of social media campaigns sponsored by each organization (e.g., Why Care? by UFWH; 5th Birthday by USAID) Chicago Council on Global Affairs---Met with Roger Thurow, senior advisor on the Council and former UFWH summit keynote speaker. In July of 2013, members of the Auburn UFWH leadership team, Thurow, and Tony Hall represented the Alliance to End Hunger in a series of debriefings on Capitol Hill. Thurow has since accepted an invitation to serve on the Board of Advisors for the Auburn University Hunger Solutions Institute. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)---UFWH became a member of the World Food Day strategic planning team in 2012, and FAO now serves as an internship placement for select students from UFWH-affiliated campuses. 8th Annual UFWH Summit Because Auburn is the founding university in the UFWH network and provides the infrastructure for the coalition through its Hunger Solutions Institute, it is important that one or more members of the leadership team participate in all major UFWH events at state, national and international levels for purposes of networking with existing members, recruiting new institutions, making professional presentations, and staying abreast of hunger-related issues and solutions. Major outcomes of the UFWH Summit included: Strengthening of UFWH’s relationship with key private and public sector partners (e.g., FAO, WFP; Farm Foundation; Elanco) Recruitment of new colleges and universities into the UFWH network, including a minority-serving institution Commitment by representatives of the Maine Cooperative Extension System to host a state-wide university hunger dialogue based on the Kansas and North Carolina models Pledges from attendees to continue supporting academic and grassroots initiatives that promote awareness, activism, and intellectual discovery in relation to hunger and food insecurity
