Progress 06/01/07 to 01/31/08
Outputs This USDA SBIR Phase I research and development project will result in an effective, long-lasting, sprayable formulation to eradicate Pectinophora gossypiella, the cotton pink bollworm (PBW) from the United States. This project will contribute to USDA's section 8.2 Plant Production and Protection - Biology, to examine means of enhancing crop production by applying biological approaches to reducing the impact of harmful agents.
Impacts The problem we propose to solve has been judged significant and of high importance and the R&D leading to SPLAT PBW would significantly aid in current eradication programs led by USDA/APHIS. USDA-APHIS and the Arizona Cotton Research and Protection Council corroborate the potential importance of this new technology. The work towards eradicating this pest would reduce the expense of pesticide application as well as the inherent risk of applying those pesticides to the environment and the applicator. This would provide an advantage to the US grower not enjoyed by those overseas.
