Goals / Objectives
To obtain germplasm of saltgrass for conservation in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm system and use in crop development programs.
Project Methods
Populations of saltgrass native to Nevada, California, and Oregon will be located. Germplasm will be collected and documented with locality, latitude and longitude, plant description, and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Samples of germplasm, herbarium specimens, and associated documentaiton will be shared between Colorado State University and the U.S. National Plant Germplasm system.

Progress Report 4d Progress report. This report serves to document research conducted under a grant from ARS to Colorado State University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 1275-21000-170-00D: PLANT EXPLORATIONS TO ACQUIRE CROP GENETIC RESOURCES. Seven collections of germplasm of saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) were made during an exploration in Nevada and California. Saltgrass is of interest for development as a turf grass with applications including golf course, parks, and a variety of low-maintenance uses. It is also an important resource for restoring degraded lands in the western United States. The germplasm has been deposited in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System.
