Non Technical Summary
DNA sequencing of the first aphid genome is complete. The International Aphid Genomics Consortium is gearing up to begin annotation of this new resource in an annotation jamboree at Princeton University in the Summer of 2008. Our goal in this endeavor is the generation of a single reference gene set for the pea aphid, thereby facilitating the large-scale characterization of gene function and gene networks in an agriculturally significant insect.

Goals / Objectives
The ultimate goal of the International Aphid Genomics Consortium in the annotation of the pea aphid genome is the production of a single reference gene set. In line with our goal, this workshop will facilitate communication among scientists with active interests in annotation of the pea aphid genome and recruit additional annotation contributors from the entomology community. Specifically we will: 1) Assess progress in expert annotation of gene models by the annotation teams 2) Set priorities for the next stage of gene annotation 3) Assess the status of functional annotation efforts 4) Coordinate efforts to write and publish papers associated with publication of the pea aphid genome 5) Coordinate efforts in grant writing and funding procurement to support functional annotation of the pea aphid genome 6) Educate participants in genome annotation methods so that by the end of the two-day workshop every meeting participant will have annotated their first gene.
Project Methods
The manual annotation phase of the Pea Aphid Genome Project will be officially launched in a two-day workshop at Princeton University in the Summer of 2008. This workshop will unite genome annotation experts from outside the International Aphid Genomics Consortium with pea aphid annotation teams composed of senior and junior scientists/faculty, postdocs and graduate students. The workshop's focus on manual annotation will ensure that participants leave Princeton with hands-on knowledge of the genome annotation process. By working on their laptop computers workshop participants will have the opportunity to annotate a gene during the workshop. Annotation teams will meet in person and build working relationships and workflow plans for completing the annotation of their gene sets in the months following the workshop. In addition we will host open forum sessions to discuss community plans for publication of the genome, refinement of our functional annotation goals and plans for the procurement of funds to support additional work with this new genomic resource.

Outputs
OUTPUTS: Pea Aphid Genome Annotation Workshop I was held at Princeton University, Princeton NJ, on July 14th and 15th 2008. The workshop was attended by 59 people from 10 countries. Workshop participants came from universities, government research organizations and industry and included graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, university faculty and scientists in full-time research positions. Dissemination of workshop resources and materials, the continued development of the aphid as a model and communication regarding Pea Aphid Genome Annotation Workshop II has been via several web-based resources including meeting websites (e.g. http://www.as.miami.edu/AphidWorkshop/ and http://aphid.cgenomics.org/), a collaboration wiki (https://dgc.cgb.indiana.edu/display/aphid/Introduction), an aphid genomics listserve and development of AphidBase (http://www.aphidbase.com/aphidbase/). PARTICIPANTS: Alex C. C. Wilson (PI) - Meeting organizer and coordinator Jennifer Abe - undergraduate administrative assistant. Impacts
Pea Aphid Genome Annotation Workshop I was the event that launched the community annotation phase of the pea aphid genome sequencing project. This workshop achieved several things. First, it provided the community with an aggressive timeline for establishment of manual annotation infrastructure and completion of the automated annotation phase of the project. Second, it resulted in the establishment of community-based annotation guidelines and standards together with, and facilitated by, the Aphid Collaboration Wiki (https://dgc.cgb.indiana.edu/display/aphid/Introduction). Third, by bringing together members of the aphid community, it united the International Aphid Genomics Consortium (IAGC), in a way that only happens when people are able to interact face-to-face. At the end of the workshop the IAGC had agreed upon an aggressive annotation and publication timeline, giving the community three months to complete manual annotation and another two months for paper preparation and submission. Most annotation groups had completed their annotations and submitted abstracts of their companion papers by the October 15th deadline and the main genome paper existed as a first draft by December 15th 2008. By the end of February 2009 annotation groups had begun submitting companion papers and we are now (mid-March 2009) within an estimated three weeks of submitting the main genome paper to PLoS Biology. Pea Aphid Genome Annotation Workshop I facilitated the IAGC setting and coming close to meeting a very ambitious analysis and publication timeline for this new genomic resource for the aphid, an agriculturally significant insect.
