Progress 10/01/04 to 09/30/05
Outputs Over 350 potato varieties and breeding lines were evaluated in replicated trials by grouping the potatoes by type, color, or use. Six lines of red-skinned potatoes were in a state wide trial in three locations. One of the trials was part of the NE- Regioal Project Variety Trial conducted in seven states. Results are found in the Florida Chip and Fresh Market Potato Variety Trial Report, 2005, University of Florida, IFAS. Twelve advanced yellow-fleshed potato selections as well as more intense yellow-fleshed hybrids were grown in replicated a field study completing a two year study in FL and ME. Tuber carotenoid content will be analyzed by HPLC. The stability of tuber carotenoid composition across different growing environments will be ascertained.
Impacts The Florida potato industry needs better quality fresh and processing cultivars. This program is evaluating breeders lines to find superior quality, yield, and marketability to provide growers and consumers the best possible product. This is a continuing process to keep the Florida industry conpetative and profitable.
