Goals / Objectives
To understand social, cultural, and economic values and benefits of natural resources and their management.
Project Methods
Utilize authoring systems (including web-based delivery mechanisms) to demonstrate human - environment relations (in an interactive context). Utilize spatial analysis systems to examine human - environment relations (in a geographic context).

Progress 01/01/01 to 12/31/05

Outputs
A GIS database of human dimensions information for 1980-2010 (projected) was created and is now available for use. Data is presented in ARCview format at the county and census block group level for all 50 states in the nation.

Impacts
The dataset is being used by state forest, national forests, and researchers form institutions inthe United States to measure recreation demand and environmental justice issues.

Progress 01/01/04 to 12/31/04

Outputs
A GIS databse of human dimensions information for 1980 - 2000 (inclusive) has been built and is now available.

Impacts
Several USDA forests and districts have reported using the human dimensions framework website for forest plans and revisions. The NSRE dataset is being used to assist statewide planning for parks and recreation departments.

Progress 01/01/02 to 12/31/02

Outputs
Work is continuing on the following aspects of the human dimensions project: 1) refinement and maintenance of the human dimensions website for forest planning http://hdf.itos.uga.edu/ 2) data collection as part of the national survey on recreation and the environment, including assessment of public values and attitudes toward forests and the natural environment

Impacts
Several USDA forests and districts have reported using the human dimensions framework website for forest plans and revisions. The NSRE dataset is being used to assist statewide planning for parks and recreation departments.

Progress 01/01/01 to 12/31/01

Outputs
Work has begun on building a spatial (GIS) database of protected areas and census data (at the county level) for 1980, 1990, and 2000. This database will be used to examine human migration patterns to the vicinity of proected lands in the United States. The data have been mapped and initial geographical (spatial) analysis has been conducted. However, there has been no statistical analysis of the data and no publications or presentations have yet been made.

Impacts
No impact to date, but results are expected to impact protected areas management and decisions, especially with regard to identifying communities of influence in and around protected areas.
